Overview
A leading national research and education network is seeking a Software Engineering Lead to guide a team of talented developers in building and delivering advanced operational support systems (OSS).
This role combines hands-on development, technical architecture, and team leadership, ideal for an engineer who thrives on open-source tooling, automation, and driving meaningful impact across a large-scale, high-performance network environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead a team delivering OSS solutions using open-source and commercial technologies
- Drive architecture and design decisions across systems and integrations
- Contribute to key coding efforts, setting the benchmark for clean, efficient, and scalable code
- Modernise legacy systems and migrate functionality to new platforms
- Champion best practices in CI / CD, DevOps, and software lifecycle automation
- Oversee integrations with network telemetry systems and data pipelines
- Mentor developers, facilitate Agile delivery, and foster a culture of innovation and collaboration
What You’ll Need
Proven experience leading software development teams (OSS, NMS, or infrastructure environments ideal)Strong hands-on programming skills in Python, Go, Java, Rust, or CExperience delivering containerised services (e.g. Kubernetes, Docker )Strong understanding of APIs, data formats (JSON, YAML, XML) , and integration patternsProficiency with SQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MSSQL)Understanding of microservices architecture and distributed systems (highly desirable)Familiarity with IP networking, SNMP, routing protocols , and OSS tools (Netbox, Netconf, Grafana, Icinga)Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage stakeholders effectivelyMust be an Australian Citizen or Permanent ResidentWhy You’ll Love It
