About Boroondara

At the City of Boroondara, we’re proud to support a thriving and inclusive community. We work together to create a sustainable future, provide high-quality services, and place our customers at the heart of everything we do. Our people are passionate about contributing to a safe, welcoming and innovative place to live and work.

About the role

We're seeking an experienced, proactive and team-focused individual to take on the important role of Leading Hand – Waste and Recycling Centre . This is a fantastic opportunity to step into a hands‑on leadership role and contribute to the day-to-day operations of one of our most essential community services.

As the Leading Hand, you’ll play a key part in coordinating the operations of the Boroondara Waste and Recycling Centre – including the Transfer Station, Recycling Centre, Green Waste Facility and Gatehouse. Your leadership will ensure our site is safe, compliant and running efficiently. You’ll be responsible for leading the team on the ground – managing rosters, providing coaching, training new staff and ensuring high performance. This is a role that balances active team supervision with operational work such as vehicle operation, yard oversight and customer service.

You’ll also take ownership of tasks such as managing monetary transactions at the Gatehouse, conducting toolbox meetings, ensuring compliance with all waste management legislation, and supporting contractors and service providers. Your work will support a clean, safe and functional space for our community members to manage their waste responsibly. You'll be someone who can lead from the front – whether that’s mentoring new starters, helping coordinate site logistics or stepping into the Acting Coordinator role when required.

About You

We’re looking for someone who brings strong leadership and communication skills, a safety‑first mindset, and proven experience working in waste, recycling or transfer station operations. You’ll be confident managing a team, resolving issues on the spot, and operating a variety of plant and equipment. You’ll also need a Heavy Combination licence, sound IT skills, and a passion for delivering excellent customer service to residents and stakeholders.

At Boroondara, we value integrity, innovation, respect and collaboration. We’re looking for someone who will lead by example, empower others and bring a positive approach to problem‑solving and service delivery.
