Research Fellow (National Perinatal Epidemiology and Statistics Unit)

Join UNSW in the National Perinatal Epidemiology and Statistics Unit (NPESU) as a Research Fellow. The role is a 2‑year fixed‑term, full‑time (35 hours a week) position based in Kensington, NSW. Salary ranges from $127k to $150k base plus 17% superannuation and leave loading. Visa sponsorship is not available; candidates must hold full rights to work in Australia.

Unit Overview

The NPESU is part of the Centre for Big Data Research in Health and is strategically partnered with the School of Clinical Medicine (Women’s Health) at UNSW. The unit operates at the intersection of clinical and public health research, leveraging large‑scale complex health data to advance perinatal epidemiology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent and / or team‑based epidemiological and statistical research using large health datasets.
  • Support project activities within the NPESU, contributing to study design, data management and analysis.
  • Apply advanced statistical methods to population and linked health data, including prediction modelling and causal inference.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to generate high‑impact research outputs.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards regarding sensitive data.

Qualifications and Experience

  • PhD in biostatistics, epidemiology or applied statistics, or a postgraduate qualification in one of these fields plus relevant research experience.
  • Demonstrated track record in epidemiological research with high‑quality, high‑impact outcomes and a commitment to research excellence.
  • Strong understanding of study design and statistical analysis of population and linked health data.
  • Experience in managing and analysing large, complex linked data sets.
  • Advanced data analysis skills and proficiency with multiple statistical software packages.
  • Knowledge of prediction modelling and / or causal inference methods is highly advantageous.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and apply ethical principles related to privacy and data protection.
