Job Description

The AEC is seeking an experienced Azure Engineer to support a high-profile program delivering web portals, applications and integration solutions hosted on Microsoft Azure. The engineer will work with multi-disciplinary teams, collaborating with developers, solution architects, and platform specialists to ensure Azure environments are correctly configured, secure, compliant, and aligned with enterprise standards. The Azure Engineer will also play a key role in supporting deployment automation and ensuring the consistency and reliability of the Azure hosting environment.

About the project

The Funding and Disclosure Reform Program was established to enable the AEC to implement and administer legislative amendments to the Commonwealth Funding and Disclosure Scheme (the Scheme) as set out in Part XX of the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 (Electoral Act) to increase transparency and accountability in Australia’s electoral system. The Program is made up of three branches – the Program Management Office Branch, the Regulatory Enablement Branch, and the Technology Delivery Branch – that will work together to uplift the AEC’s regulatory capability by designing, building and implementing new processes, resourcing, tools, systems and technology to successfully administer the Scheme.

Requirements

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Work effectively with multidisciplinary teams to define, provision and maintain Azure based solutions supporting scalability, resilience, and performance, in line with business requirements and software development standards.
  • Participate in solution design discussions, offering input on Azure architecture, services, and trade-offs.
  • Implement and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Bicep templates, integrated with Azure DevOps version control and CI / CD pipelines.
  • Work effectively in collaboration with application and platform teams to Troubleshoot and resolve Azure environment issues.
  • Ensure deadlines are consistently met and that a high standard of technical and design documentation is provided.
  • Ensure all infrastructure configurations comply with enterprise architecture, cloud governance, security policies, and naming conventions.
  • Monitor and report on environment usage, cost, and performance, providing recommendations for optimisation.
  • Perform additional duties or assume responsibility of functions as required.

Criteria

Essential criteria

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in implementing enterprise IT solutions consuming Azure services - including, but not limited to the following : o Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) o Serverless Compute - Azure Functions, Web Apps o Storage - blobs, files shares, queues and tables o Integration - Service Bus and Event Hub o Identity - Entra ID (AAD), Azure B2C and Entra ID Connect o API Management (APIM) - developing APIs, APIM maintenance and infrastructure
  • Demonstrated experience with managing, maintaining and migrating solution infrastructure to the Azure platform from on-premises or other private cloud infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated experience with maintaining solution infrastructure on the Azure platform including : o Identity maintenance and management (service principals, managed identities, etc) o Patching Activities o Solution cost optimization
  • Understanding of Azure networking concepts and technologies and demonstrated knowledge of risk management principles and processes in context of Infrastructure management
  • Cultural fit : o Ability to work with geographically dispersed teams o Ability to work with technical and non-technical staff at all levels. o Ability to collaborate and mentor team members to promote harmony
  • Knowledge of security best practices and compliance requirements for cloud infrastructure and experience with monitoring tools and logging frameworks to ensure the reliability and security of deployed solutions.
  • Desirable criteria

    1. Demonstrated experience in developing Azure DevOps CI / CD YAML pipelines using Bicep and / or ARM

    2. Relevant qualifications in IT, including cloud certification

    3. Experience with GIT version control and common branching strategies

    4. Demonstrated knowledge of IT frameworks, such as ITIL and TOGAF

    Essential criteria 1. A track record of delivering technology products in large organisations 2. A demonstrated understanding of what makes for a great developer experience for external users 3. Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams that follow agile and user-centred design practices 4. Experience working on large Government transformation programs highly regarded Desirable criteria 1. Knowledge, experience of, and relationships with the agriculture technology industry 2. Delivery of technology to support regulatory decision-making processes 3. Experience delivering to the Australian Government Digital Service Standard
