About the Role

The Head of Primary Music leads the Primary Music Team, providing services to Canberra Grammar School, especially students and team members from Pre-School to Year 6, including the Campbell Campus. They provide guidance to a team of highly qualified and committed teachers, developing a climate of excellence and articulating a vision for an education that is inclusive, rigorous and prepares students for the 21st century.

The Head of Primary Music ensures that the teaching, learning, resources, and services are central to the implementation of the Primary Years Programme and support the Music needs of the school community. The Head of Primary Music is a person who can communicate a clear vision and who will drive forward innovative and dynamic approaches in the Primary School Music Team. They will work in collaboration with the Head of Music Department and the Director of Academic Education, as well as assisting the Music Team to connect and collaborate with the Senior School and within Cocurricular.

The Head of Primary Music will ideally have experience of the Australian Curriculum programmes requirements, the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, and / or the Early Years Learning Framework. This role has a 0.7 FTE teaching load and an allowance of 0.1 FTE for Head of Primary Music duties. It is expected that they will be in attendance for part of the week prior to the start of the school year for teachers to support new team members entering the school. This arrangement is subject to change based on the school’s operational requirements.

About You

You are dedicated, passionate and possess the following :

  • Curriculum knowledge and learning and teaching strategies from Pre-school to Year 6, explicitly with a focus on Music
  • Early Years qualifications, or the commitment to attain them in the first 2 years of the position
  • Proven experience in developing innovative academic pathways to achieve outstanding academic results for all students
  • Proven experience in the provision of pastoral care to effectively meet the personal, social, emotional and academic needs of all students
  • The ability to work collaboratively with other members of staff and manage others
  • PYP experience or an understanding of Inquiry pedagogy
  • The ability to collaborate with others to implement initiatives, project delivery and change management
  • Well-developed administrative and organisational skills
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to the full life of an independent school and a willingness to engage in School activities out of regular hours.

    • All team members at CGS are required to have :

  • A relevant tertiary degree and teaching qualification
  • Excellent written English and effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent technological literacy across a range of applications
  • An ACT teacher’s registration through the ACT TQI
  • A valid ACT Working with Vulnerable People Card
  • A current National Police Check; and
  • Full working rights within Australia.
