Job Description
We are seeking a skilled and driven Mechanical Technician to support the build and modification of special-purpose vehicles. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with mining vehicles, heavy commercial vehicles, or defence platforms, and a trade background such as boilermaker, heavy diesel mechanic, or fabricator.
You will be responsible for supporting prototype builds, vehicle upfits, mechanical integration, and workshop coordination. This is a hands-on role working closely with engineers, technicians, and workshop leadership to ensure quality outcomes.
Key Responsibilities :
Mechanical Systems & Integration
- Assemble, fit, and modify mechanical components on custom engineered vehicles.
- Install and integrate commercial accessories and sub-systems.
- Read and interpret mechanical drawings and fabrication instructions
- Assist with installation of fabricated parts, brackets, mounts, and structure
- Collaborate with engineers on fitment issues, tolerances, and mechanical testing
Workshop Operations & Safety
Maintain an organised and safe workspace in line with WHS standardsOperate tools and equipment safely including hoists, welding / fabrication tools, and torque toolsConduct mechanical inspections and fault findingSupport the Workshop Manager in tooling and equipment readinessAssist with pre-start checks and end-of-line functional testsPrototype & Build Support
Support one-off builds or low-volume prototype projectsProvide feedback to engineers on assembly processes and issuesLiaise with other trades (electrical, fabrication, etc.) to ensure integrated build qualityAssist with retrofits, upgrades, and post-build modificationsDocumentation & Continuous Improvement
Record mechanical works completed and assist in job tracking or QA documentationSuggest process improvements for workshop efficiency and product qualityContribute to lessons learned on new product development projectsQualifications
Relevant trade qualification in Mechanical Fitting, Diesel Mechanics, Boiler making, or similar5+ years of experience in mechanical assembly, fabrication or similarStrong mechanical aptitude with ability to work from drawings and specificationsExperience with electrical wiring and electrical systems desirableAbility to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and engineering specifications.Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or within a team.Commitment to workplace safety and quality standards.What we offer?
