The role

Are you ready to play a key role in shaping safe, compliant, and sustainable development across our city? We're looking for a proactive and knowledgeable Building Surveyor to join our dedicated Building Compliance team.

In this role, you’ll help ensure Council continues to meet its responsibilities in development assessment, building certification and compliance, all while upholding the expectations of our growing community.

You’ll be responsible for enforcing building regulations and overseeing the assessment of development applications, including complying development certificates, construction and occupation certificates and building information certificates. When acting as the Principal Certifier, you’ll also conduct critical stage inspections, ensuring quality and safety at every step.

Duties will include but not be limited to :

  • Deliver timely and effective building certification and development assessment services.
  • Investigate unauthorised or non-compliant works, applying relevant legislation and codes.
  • Provide expert advice to Council and the community on certification and compliance matters.
  • Manage workload to meet Council’s service delivery standards.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to support a positive and results-focused environment.
  • Assess building compliance and prepare clear communications on non-compliance and actions required.
  • Conduct statutory inspections to support a trusted certification service.
  • Communicate compliance issues through concise reporting and customer engagement.
  • Contribute to initiatives that improve team operations and performance.
  • Maintain current knowledge of legislation and complete required training for registration.
  • Support community education on building and development standards.

You will have

  • Tertiary qualifications in Building Surveying or a related field.
  • Registered Building Surveyor under NSW Fair Trading requirements.
  • Current Class C Driver’s Licence and Construction White Card.
  • Extensive experience in building surveying, including roles as Certifying Authority and Principal Certifier.
  • Experience in development enforcement or compliance within local government.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant legislation and codes (e.g. EP\&A Act, Local Government Act, BCA).
  • Proven interpersonal, conflict resolution, and negotiation skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Professional registration as Building Surveyor - Restricted (Class 1 or 10) would be desirable but not essential.
  • The salary range for this opportunity starts at $93,583 (Grade G, Step 1) + Car Allowance or Leaseback Vehicle + 12% super
