The National Archives of Australia is seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead and manage the Digital Experience Project . This strategic initiative focuses on enhancing the digital experience for users interacting with National Archives' platforms. The role will involve managing end-to-end delivery of this medium-to-large scale digital transformation project , coordinating cross-functional teams, and managing interdependencies across business units. The successful candidate will drive agile project management practices and ensure that project outcomes align with strategic objectives.
The position is based in Canberra, ACT , and requires a hybrid working arrangement .
Key Skills and Experience Requirements Project Leadership and Accountability : Proven experience in leading and managing medium-scale projects, providing effective leadership to project teams, and ensuring the successful completion of project objectives. Project Management Methodologies : Strong background in applying project management methodologies such as Agile , Scrum , or Kanban , including change control and risk management processes. Planning and Performance Monitoring : Demonstrated ability to maintain realistic project plans, monitor costs, timelines, quality, and resources, and take corrective action when performance deviates from agreed tolerances. Stakeholder Communication and Engagement : Experience in identifying stakeholder needs, translating engagement strategies into actionable activities, and facilitating open communication between stakeholders to support decision-making. Quality Assurance and Deliverable Management : Experience ensuring project deliverables are completed within cost, time, and resource constraints and are formally accepted by stakeholders. Information Management and Decision Support : Strong skills in capturing and disseminating technical and business information to facilitate business decision-making processes and ensure informed understanding across stakeholder groups. Key Duties and Responsibilities Project Leadership : Lead and provide strategic direction for the project from initiation through to closure, ensuring the successful delivery of outcomes. Solution Design and Implementation : Define solutions based on business needs and present them to both technical and business stakeholders. Ensure that project solutions align with the organisation's strategic objectives. Cross-functional Coordination : Coordinate and manage cross-functional teams and interdependencies between business units to ensure project success. Agile Project Management : Drive the use of agile methodologies, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and iterative delivery throughout the project lifecycle. Stakeholder Engagement : Manage relationships with internal teams, executive leadership, and external partners, ensuring effective communication and project alignment. Monitoring and Reporting : Track project progress, monitor deliverables, and ensure the timely completion of milestones. Report project status to senior stakeholders and advise on any risks or issues. Business Requirements and Translation : Work with stakeholders to define business requirements and translate them into actionable project plans. Vendor and Contract Management : Manage procurement and vendor relationships, including contracts and negotiations, to ensure successful service delivery. Quality and Governance : Ensure compliance with project management standards and governance procedures to maintain the quality of project deliverables. Working Arrangements Location : Canberra, ACT. Hours : Full-time, 40 hours per week . Hybrid Work : The contractor will be required to work onsite at National Archives' Canberra office for the first 6 weeks before a hybrid flexible working arrangement is considered. Any WFH arrangements will require the contractor to work a minimum of 3 days per week onsite. Security Clearance Candidates must be able to obtain Baseline clearance prior to commencement. Period of Engagement Estimated Start Date : Monday, 14 July 2025 Initial Contract Duration : To 30 June 2026 Extension Term : Up to an additional 12 months , to 30 June 2027. Desirable Criteria Experience in archives or other cultural sector organisations . Familiarity with Altus by Sensei project management software. Experience with user-centred design and digital accessibility standards . Experience working in a hybrid agile / waterfall project environment. About the Project The Digital Experience Project aims to enhance how users, both internal and external, interact with National Archives' digital platforms and services . This project involves developing a centralised content management system that enables omnichannel publishing and personalised user experiences , alongside creating a unified payment system for transactions, including donations and memberships. The project also aims to streamline internal systems and processes to improve operational efficiency, providing a modern, user-friendly digital environment that supports a high-quality user experience.
