About our opportunity

Please note, this register is only open to ongoing Australian Public Service employees at the APS6 classification. This register may be used to fill vacancies within the Immigration Group over the next 12 months.

About our team

Immigration Group is responsible for administering Australia’s Permanent and Temporary Migration Programs, people smuggling policy and implementation, and the Refugee and Humanitarian Program and Settlement Programs.

The Group delivers status resolution in detention and the community, and manages the Department’s client facing services and information services. It also provides policy advice on national impacts of migration, citizenship, people mobility, and delivers citizenship, social cohesion and multicultural programs.

The Department of Home Affairs has offices located all over Australia, currently in :

  • Parramatta, New South Wales
  • Melbourne, Victoria
  • Perth, Western Australia
  • Adelaide, South Australia
  • Hobart, Tasmania
  • Brisbane, Queensland
  • Belconnen or Civic in the Australian Capital Territory.
  • Darwin, Northern Territory

You must be able to physically attend an office listed above. If an opportunity arises for you to move to a role in another state, relocation costs will be at your own expense.

    As an APS6 officer within the Immigration Group you would typically work across the following categories :

  • Managing or leading a team
  • Assessment and decision making
  • Writing policy or providing policy advice
  • Managing programs or contracts
  • Other enabling and supporting functions.
  • Additional information

    You are only eligible to apply for a permanent Section 26 transfer if you are a current ongoing APS6 employee with a Commonwealth government agency (not including Department of Home Affairs). If you are not a current ongoing APS6 employee with a Commonwealth government agency, you will be automatically disqualified.

    As part of your application you will be required to prepare and submit a one-page applicant response document in relation to how your experience, skills and qualifications make you a good fit for the Immigration Group.

    Applicant response documents must be a minimum 11pt font in MSWord or PDF format, include your full name and the Requisition Number – 138600 in the document footer.

    Prior to preparing your response it is recommended you review the Work Level standards relevant to the classification you are applying to. It may also be useful to refer to the Integrated Leadership Systems information relevant to the classification.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.

    You must be employed as an ongoing Australian Public Service employee at the APS6 classification to apply.

    The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain aBaseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance, and :

  • ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
  • Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.
  • In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
