Basic Trainee – Acute Care (previously known as Senior Resident Medical Officer in Acute Care)

This role was previously known as Senior Resident Medical Officer (SRMO) in Acute Care. Following the removal of the SRMO classification from the Medical Practitioners Agreement, the position has now been reclassified as Medical Practitioners Level 5 (Registrar). This is not a training registrar role. Separate recruitment processes apply for registrar roles in anaesthesia and intensive care.

This Basic Trainee – Acute Care (aka SRMO) role is described below with instructions on how to apply. Successful candidates will perform SRMO-equivalent duties. Further details will be discussed with short listed candidates at interview.

The Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM) and the Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine (DAPM) at the Royal Hobart Hospital offer prevocational positions as Basic Trainees in Acute Care. These consist of six months in Intensive Care and six months in Anaesthesia during the one-year tenure. Up to 6 positions are available if there are suitable applicants.

These positions are ONLY for candidates who

have a minimum of two years full time equivalent postgraduate hospital clinical experience in Australia or New Zealand , and are no more than post-graduate year 4 or equivalent, during the year of employment. We are looking for doctors with strong clinical skills and knowledge with excellent communication skills, who have career interest in Intensive Care Medicine, Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine or Remote and Rural Medicine (ACRRM).

In ICU, Acute Care Basic Trainees will undertake shiftwork under the supervision of Consultant Intensivists and Senior Registrars. They are rostered with the general registrar pool and have similar duties. After hours, they are supported by ICU registrars and the on-call Senior Registrars and Consultants. They may work regular rostered overtime, with up to 95 hours rostered per fortnight / pay period on occasion. Additionally, they may be rostered to our satellite private ICU. This ICU predominantly cares for high-risk perioperative cases, including cardiac surgical, thoracic, and neurosurgical cases, and major abdominal, as well as some medical admissions. In this role, you will work directly under the supervision of a Consultant Intensivist.

In Anaesthesia, Basic Trainees work under supervision of a Specialist Anaesthetist within main theatres, the day procedure unit, the acute pain service and anaesthetic assessment clinics. They will work day and evening shifts with subsequent participation in weekend after-hours roster when assessed as competent to do so.

Allocation of term order is determined by the two departments. These positions align with the REGISTRAR term dates, commencing 2 February 2026 – 1 February 2027.
