The Principal Legal Officer takes a lead role in providing the Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission (MHWC) with authoritative legal and strategic advice relating to the Commission's powers and functions, including in relation to complaints, investigations, inquiries, compliance activities and the Commission's monitoring and reporting function. This includes providing advice on complex and sensitive legal matters and supporting the MHWC in areas such as Freedom of Information (FOI), privacy, and policies and procedures.
The role has managerial oversight of a small legal team.
The Mental Health Wellbeing Commission (MHWC) is an accountability body in the mental health and wellbeing system established under the new Act and recommended by the Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health System. The new MHWC includes Commissioners with lived experience of mental illness or psychological distress and lived experience as a family member, carer, or supporter.
