About the Role

The National Gallery of Australia is seeking an experienced Sous Chef to join our culinary team and deliver exceptional catering for bespoke events. You will work alongside a collaborative group of hospitality professionals to execute high-profile functions for senior stakeholders and visitors.

Onsite, we also manage Kitchen by Mike (KBM) café, providing a dynamic environment to showcase your skills. As part of our team, you’ll gain exposure to a diverse range of food concepts, work at scale, and benefit from outstanding resources and professional development opportunities.

What You’ll Bring

  • A minimum of five years’ experience as a qualified chef in high-quality hospitality settings
  • Proven track record in event catering, banqueting, café or restaurant operations
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to motivate and develop kitchen teams
  • Excellent stakeholder management and relationship-building abilities
  • A passion for culinary innovation and contemporary food trends
  • Food Safety Supervisor certification (or ability to operate as one)
  • Experience delivering an upmarket café food offer

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day food production ensuring every dish meets our standards
  • Prepare a broad range of cuisines and service styles—buffets, dinners, receptions
  • Recruit, train, and manage kitchen staff; assist with rostering and performance reviews
  • Manage stock to minimize waste and maximize efficiency
  • Lead team briefings on menu details, standards, and safety procedures
  • Ensure full compliance with Food Safety and company policies
  • Essential Qualifications

  • Current Food Safety Supervisor Certificate
  • Current Food Handler’s Certificate
  • Current AFP Police Check
