Job Description
SA Unions is South Australia’s united trades and labour council, the peak voice for the South Australian union movement. About The Role
The SA Unions Workers’ Compensation Service provides free dispute resolution and advocacy services to workers who need help with their workers compensation claims.
Reporting to the Workers’ Compensation Service Coordinator, the Information Officer will be the first point of contact for injured workers to establish the nature of the query, and to provide general advice on their rights, how to navigate the Return to Work system, and the types of rehabilitation services that may be open to them.
The Information Officer will provide advice and assistance on general claims issues by phone, email, our website and social media channels.
The Information Officer is a member of the Workers’ Compensation Service team. The Information Officer will work closely together with the Coordinator, Advocate and other members of the team to collaboratively determine workload and organisation of tasks to ensure the highest possible standard of service to the clients of the service. They will be supported by another Information Officer and two Advocate Assistants.This role would suit an early career lawyer, paralegal or industrial officer with experience in industrial law.
The Information Officer Will
Maintain records of calls and queries on a database, including client identification information, employment information, claim information and dispute details.
Ensure eligibility criteria is met, refer workers to the Coordinator / Advocate for representation, and identify possible issues with legal merit when required.
Take concise briefing notes from injured workers about their claims for the provision to the Coordinator / Advocate.
Contact relevant parties to assist with general issues, such as :
Assist workers to prepare complaints relating to section 18 of the Return to Work Act SA.
Assist workers to request the provision of suitable employment from their pre-injury employer.
Advise workers about the need to apply for pre-approval to incur the cost of future surgery. Provide general information about how to do this.
Create and maintain information fact sheets for publication on the SA Unions Website.
Respond to referrals from the Tribunal, Return to Work SA and other stakeholders in the scheme.

The Information Officer is a reliable member of a small team dedicated to ensuring injured workers are treated with dignity, supported financially, and assisted to return to the workforce as quickly and safely as possible after an injury. They are professional, responsible, and understand that different clients have different needs. They acknowledge that the work that they do has real life outcomes and benefits for vulnerable people.
The Information Officer Has
DETAILS
Employment conditions will be subject to the SA Unions Enterprise Agreement 2023 and SA Unions policies.
This position is classified as UTLC Grade 4.
Salary of $93,173 p.a. Annual Enterprise Agreement pay rises and 13.5% superannuation.
