Tassal is seeking an experienced and dedicated Senior Hatchery Technician to join our Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) facility at our prawn farm in Proserpine. This role is critical in supporting the production of high-quality, disease-free broodstock as part of our innovative P. monodon (Black Tiger Prawn) breeding programme.
Working closely with the SPF Manager, you will ensure the smooth operation of our state-of-the-art facility, maintaining strict biosecurity protocols and optimising hatchery performance. Your expertise will contribute to the success of our domestication programme and the future of sustainable prawn farming in Australia.
Responsibilities : Uphold and enforce stringent biosecurity protocols to safeguard the health and genetic integrity of broodstock. Assist in the day-to-day running of the SPF facility, including animal husbandry, water quality management, feeding regimes, and system maintenance. Provide guidance and mentorship to junior technicians, fostering a culture of safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Track and analyse production metrics, health indicators, and system performance to ensure optimal outcomes. Identify and troubleshoot operational challenges, escalating critical issues when necessary. Work collaboratively with hatchery teams, research staff, and external partners to support breeding programme objectives. Ensure all activities adhere to workplace health and safety standards, aquaculture regulations, and company policies. Requirements : Proven background in aquaculture, preferably within a hatchery, SPF facility, or broodstock production environment. Strong understanding of animal husbandry, water quality management, and biosecurity best practices. Ability to lead small teams, train staff, and maintain high operational standards. Meticulous approach to monitoring systems, animal health, and compliance requirements. Proactive mindset with the ability to troubleshoot technical and operational issues. Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills. A qualification in Aquaculture, Marine Biology, or a related field is advantageous but not essential. Full working rights in Australia.
