Job description

Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation – Dunwich QLD

Join our team at Naree Budjong Djara National Park on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island). Our rangers protect and manage Queensland’s national parks, state forests, and reserves, ensuring they are accessible and valued by all.

We seek individuals with a strong sense of responsibility towards Quandamooka cultural and environmental heritage. This role focuses on leading the Minjerribah management unit within the Moreton Bay Area of QPWS field operations.

Requirements: Demonstrated experience in natural resource management.

Everyone at our Department recognises the importance of a healthy environment. The Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation - contributes to ensuring one of the world's most diverse natural environments is maintained for the health and prosperity of current and future generations. In this role, you'll play a key role in driving the protection of one of our most wonderful places.

As a Ranger on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) you will be caring for lands owned by the Quandamooka People, who have voluntarily consented to a significant proportion of their lands being managed as National Park.

The primary focus of this role is to provide leadership for the Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) management unit within the Moreton Bay Area of Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) field operations.

Working closely with the Senior Ranger, the Ranger-in-Charge (RIC) will lead a team of rangers based on Minjerribah to ensure delivery of day-to-day management across Naree Budjong Djara National Park, Teerk Roo Ra National Park (Peel Island) and associated vessel support operations. Both parks are jointly managed under an indigenous joint management framework with the Quandamooka Yoolaburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC) representing the Quandamooka people and a substantial proportion of the ranger workforce is indigenous identified.

This position requires high-level leadership and administration skills to develop and convert annual and strategic work programs to on-ground daily and weekly activities that are delegated to the team. The position requires a strong understanding of natural resource management to deliver fire and pest management programs and activities consistent with protected area park management including community engagement, compliance operations, visitor management, administration, financial management, capital works, safety and vessel, plant and equipment management.

The position requires strong record keeping and reporting skills to navigate the QPWS systems that are used for park management and conservation purposes.

This position is based in Dunwich, Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island). QPWS will assist with daily ferry travel to and from the island for a person choosing to live on the mainland. You may be required to travel to other locations from time to time, including overnight stays.

What's in it for you?

  • Enjoy a varied and interesting work program where no two days are the same. Join a supportive high-performing team with a positive culture and inspiring leadership!
  • Enjoy fantastic flexibility, benefits, work life balance, significant development opportunities!
  • You’ll experience so much here. For most of us, it starts with our wonderful people and the rich, diverse perspectives they bring. They’re dedicated, passionate and curious professionals. We’re all different, and those differences are what make us great.
