Job description

Why Baptist World Aid Australia?

We’re an international Christian development organisation working in 24 countries. We partner with like-minded organisations overseas to implement community development and disaster projects that empower communities to lift themselves out of poverty. Last year, our work benefited over 800 000 people.

When you join Baptist World Aid, you’ll become part of a rich, 60‑year history. As a valued member of our team, you’ll be integral to achieving our mission of helping Australians tackle the injustice of global poverty.

About the Role

As our Communications Lead, you’ll partner with cross‑functional teams, such as partnerships, fundraising, international programs and regular giving, to create integrated communications plans and supporting materials that strengthen supporter connection and amplify our mission. You’ll guide a small creative team, lead organisation‑wide storytelling, and deliver communications that cut through with purpose and heart.

From media opportunities to campaign messaging, you’ll bring clarity, consistency and creativity—helping us share stories that matter and elevate our impact. If you love leading people, shaping strategy and turning big ideas into meaningful engagement, this role is made for you.

About You

  • A thoughtful, analytical leader who uses data to sharpen decisions, shape and strengthen strategy, and adopt technology that boosts clarity, efficiency and impact.
  • A clear and confident communicator who brings strong writing, sharp editing and compelling visual storytelling to every piece of work.
  • A collaborative team player who listens deeply and guides processes with purpose, uniting people around shared goals and providing steady leadership—supporting, influencing and setting direction while nurturing a high‑performing, creative environment.
  • Highly organized and dependable, bringing calm to complexity—juggling multiple deadlines with ease and keeping calendars, workflows and approvals moving smoothly for everyone using workflow tools.
  • Someone who understands what motivates supporters—donors, churches, advocates—and is excited to translate those insights into engagement that truly matters.
  • Experienced in elevating brand awareness through thoughtful media engagement, spotting opportunities early and shaping spokespeople who shine.
  • Curious, creative and willing to experiment, bringing fresh ideas for digital content and storytelling—and enjoying sharing what you learn along the way.

We’d love to hear from you!

  • Experienced in managing people, supporting team members and setting direction while cultivating a high‑performing environment.
  • Organised and reliable, able to manage multiple deadlines and proactively lead calendars, workflows and approvals.
  • Understands what motivates supporters—including donors, church communities and advocates—and applies this insight to engagement and content.
  • Responds professionally in urgent or unexpected situations, contributing calm, clear communication and involving the right internal stakeholders.
  • Experienced in building brand awareness through media engagement, including identifying opportunities, preparing spokespeople and strengthening organisational visibility.
  • Curious, forward‑thinking and willing to experiment—bringing fresh ideas for digital content, engagement and storytelling, and sharing learnings with the team.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience in international development or faith‑based settings, with an understanding of the sensitivities and storytelling needs in this space.
  • Knowledge of digital best practice, including how to improve the clarity, usability and performance of web pages, emails and supporter journeys.
  • Experience representing organisations with confidence at external events, forums or media opportunities.
  • Experience communicating for advocacy or public mobilisation, with the ability to turn issues into clear, motivating messages.
  • Familiarity with data‑informed communication, such as reading insights, understanding audience behaviour, and adjusting content accordingly.
