About the area

The School of Health and Clinical Sciences at The University of Western Australia (UWA) is a research-intensive academic environment where excellence in research underpins teaching, clinical practice and community engagement.

Within the School, the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences delivers the highly regarded Doctor of Optometry program alongside Higher Degree by Research training. The Department is committed to developing socially accountable clinicians and researchers who provide responsive, person-centred care and contribute to improving health outcomes across diverse communities.

Clinical education is central to the Department's mission and is delivered through a network of teaching eye clinics and community partnerships throughout Western Australia. Students develop advanced clinical, communication and professional skills through supervised practice and exposure to a range of care settings.

About the opportunity

We are seeking a motivated and passionate optometrist to join our academic team and contribute to the delivery of high-quality teaching, clinical supervision, research and engagement activities.

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver clinical teaching and provide hands-on supervision, supporting students to develop strong clinical, diagnostic and communication skills.
  • Contribute to community-based education, including outreach clinics and placements within Aboriginal community-controlled health services, promoting culturally safe and responsive care.
  • Collaborate with academic and professional colleagues to enhance student learning through innovative and evidence-based teaching approaches.
  • Assist with unit coordination, curriculum delivery, assessment and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to practice-based research and scholarly activities, particularly in areas such as clinical education, workforce development and healthcare delivery models.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with community organisations, healthcare providers and professional bodies to strengthen clinical education and service delivery
  • Participate in academic service activities and contribute to a collaborative and high-performing academic environment.

This position provides an excellent opportunity for a clinician interested in developing an academic career while continuing to contribute to clinical education, research and community engagement.

About you

You will bring a combination of clinical expertise, teaching capability and a commitment to delivering outstanding educational outcomes.

  • A degree in optometry with eligibility for registration and therapeutic endorsement with the Optometry Board of Australia.
  • Demonstrated clinical experience and/or university teaching experience, with the ability to support student learning and supervise in clinical settings.
  • An emerging or established track record in research, scholarship or practice-based professional activities.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with students, colleagues, clinical partners and external organisations.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and leadership skills, together with a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

This position is only available for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island people as permitted under Section 50(d) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984. UWA believes that an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander individual would bring essential insights and understanding to this role, enhancing the university’s ability to connect with and serve the community effectively.
