Tour Guide – Seasonal (Position #26140991)
Montana Historical Society (MTHS) seeks an energetic and talented person for the seasonal position of Tour Guide. The tour guide will represent MTHS to the public, embodying our culture of excellence, teamwork, professionalism, and passion for Montana history, art, and architecture.
Responsibilities
- Master the content associated with the historic sites and exhibits.
- Deliver accurate and captivating programming relevant to and about the sites.
- Tailor tours to visitor interests, needs, or preferences.
- Engage audience members through a variety of interpretative techniques.
- Facilitate interactive, experiential learning opportunities.
- Listen to visitors and foster social experiences and interactions.
- Manage group dynamics within an interpretive experience.
- Support public events such as lectures, conferences, and children’s programs.
- Take appropriate measures to protect visitors, personnel, the resource, and the organization from risk and loss.
- Complete daily reports and compile information.
- Respond to visitor complaints or concerns with tact and diplomacy.
- Field questions on controversial issues.
- Perform self‑assessments to determine areas for improvement.
- Demonstrate professionalism in appearance, attendance, demeanor, and representation of the organization.
- Work closely with MTHS tour and security staff to provide high‑quality visitor services.
Knowledge
- Public speaking, teaching, interacting with children and/or providing tours.
Skills
- Strong listening and people skills.
Abilities
- Utilize public speaking techniques to express ideas and concepts to a wide range of audiences.
- Perform a variety of interpretive techniques (e.g., asking visitors questions, posing thought experiments) to engage diverse audiences.
- Accept constructive feedback and guidance.

- Perform self‑assessments to identify strengths and areas for improvement.
- Learn new interpretive techniques to engage audience members.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One‑year experience in a customer‑service oriented industry.
- Public speaking, teaching, interacting with children and/or providing tours.
- Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Prolonged periods of activity.
- Able to speak for long periods of time.
- Standing for long periods of time.
- Work weekends, holidays, and special events.
- Able to lift 20 pounds.
