2027 Apprentice Program - Based in Wagga Wagga

  • Build a Career that matters – Hands On. Future Ready.

  • Learn from the best while shaping Australia's energy future.

  • Competitive starting salary package, at $70,330.35 (including 16.5% Superannuation)

About our Apprentice Program

At Transgrid, we know that starting your career is a big step. That's why our Apprentice Program is designed to give you the support, training and real-world experience you need to succeed.

As a Transgrid apprentice, you'll learn from experienced tradespeople, work alongside industry experts, and develop practical skills that will stay with you for life. From your first day, you'll be part of a team that values safety, teamwork, inclusion and continuous learning.

Over four years, you'll gain a nationally recognised qualification while working on some of Australia's most significant energy infrastructure projects, helping connect communities, support renewable energy, and keep the lights on for millions of Australians.

Whether you're finishing school, looking for a hands-on career, or ready to learn a trade that offers long-term opportunities, Transgrid can help you build a future you're proud of.

We're looking for motivated individuals who enjoy working as part of a team, solving problems, learning new skills and making a real difference through one of our three apprenticeship pathways.

Choose Your Pathway

At Transgrid, we offer three exciting apprenticeship pathways, each providing unique opportunities to build practical skills, gain nationally recognised qualifications, and contribute to Australia's energy future.

As part of your application, you'll be asked to nominate your preferred apprenticeship pathway. Don't worry if you're interested in more than one area - throughout the recruitment process, we'll consider your skills, interests and suitability across all available pathways and may discuss alternative opportunities with you.

Electrical Substation Technician Apprenticeship

Power the network that powers our communities.

As an Electrical Substation Technician Apprentice, you'll work on the critical infrastructure that helps deliver safe and reliable electricity across NSW and the ACT. You'll gain hands-on experience maintaining, testing and commissioning high-voltage electrical equipment within substations while learning from experienced tradespeople and technical specialists.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you'll develop skills in electrical systems, fault finding, maintenance, safety practices and equipment testing while completing a nationally recognised qualification.

This pathway is ideal for people who enjoy technical problem-solving, working with complex equipment and being part of a highly skilled team.

Telecommunications Technician Apprenticeship

Help keep our network connected.

As a Telecommunications Technician Apprentice, you'll work on the communication systems that support the safe and reliable operation of Transgrid's electricity network. You'll gain practical experience building, commissioning and maintaining critical technologies including fibre optic networks, OPGW, microwave systems, radios and operational communication equipment.

Working alongside experienced technicians, you'll develop skills in installation, commissioning, maintenance and fault finding while completing a nationally recognised qualification.

This pathway is ideal for people who enjoy technology, troubleshooting, innovation and working in a constantly evolving technical environment.

Transmission Line Technician Apprenticeship

Build your career outdoors.

As a Transmission Line Technician Apprentice, you'll work on some of Australia's most important energy infrastructure, helping construct, inspect and maintain high-voltage transmission lines and towers that connect communities across the state.

This hands-on apprenticeship combines technical training, outdoor work, travel opportunities and working at heights. You'll develop specialist skills while working alongside experienced crews and completing a nationally recognised qualification.

This pathway is ideal for people who enjoy practical work, teamwork, travelling, working outdoors and taking on new challenges every day.

Why Transgrid?

  • Earn While You Learn: Start your career with a competitive salary package of $70,330.35, including 16.5% superannuation, while gaining valuable industry experience and a nationally recognised qualification.
  • Learn from Experience Mentors: You'll be supported by experienced tradespeople, leaders and fellow apprentices who are invested in helping you succeed, both personally and professionally.

  • Build Skills for Life: Develop practical, hands-on skills through a combination of classroom learning and real-world experience, including technical training, tool handling, machinery operation, welding and high-risk licences.

  • Be Part of Australia's Energy Future: Work on critical infrastructure projects that help deliver reliable electricity to communities and connect renewable energy across the country.

  • A Career with Purpose: Every day, your work will contribute to something bigger - helping power homes, hospitals, schools, businesses and communities across NSW and the ACT.

  • A Supportive and Inclusive Workplace: We celebrate diversity and create an environment where everyone feels welcome, respected and valued. Our employee networks support gender equality, LGBTQIA+ inclusion, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees, and many other communities across our business.

  • Work-Life Balance Matter: Enjoy a 9-day fortnight, flexible leave options, study assistance and wellbeing initiatives designed to help you thrive both at work and at home.

  • Comprehensive Benefits: Access generous leave benefits including 20 weeks parental leave, 18 days personal leave, annual picnic day, moving leave, emergency/disaster leave, salary sacrifive options and employee wellbeing support programs.

  • Everything You Need to Succeed: We'll provide the tools, equipment, training and protective clothing you need to work safely and confidently throughout your apprenticeship.

Eligibility Criteria

We're looking for people who are eager to learn, enjoy hands-on work, and want to build a long-term career in the energy industry. You don't need previous industry experience - just the right attitude, willingness to learn, and commitment to working safely.

To be eligible for our 2027 Apprentice Program, you'll need to:

  • Have turned 18 already or be turning 18 in 2027.
  • Demonstrate sound literacy, numeracy and communication skills.
  • Have a genuine interest in pursuing a trade career within the high-voltage electricity transmission industry.
  • Hold a current driver's licence or be willing to obtain one shortly after commencing employment.
  • Be committed to working safely and contributing positively as part of a team.
  • Be motivated, reliable and willing to learn new skills.
  • Be respectful of people from diverse backgrounds and committed to creating an inclusive workplace.
  • Be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or New Zealand Citizen.
  • Be willing to travel and work away from home when required, as part of your training and development.
  • Be available to commence in January 2027.

Important: As part of the role, apprentices may be required to work at heights and on specialised plant and equipment. For safety reasons, approved equipment has a maximum operating weight limit of 140kg.

The Recruitment Journey

We know applying for your first career opportunity can feel daunting, so we've designed a recruitment process that allows you to showcase your potential, not just your experience.

  1. Submit Your Application: Create your profile through our careers portal and tell us about yourself, your interests, education and why you're interested in joining Transgrid.

  2. Online Assessments: Eligible applicants will be invited to complete a series of online assessments designed to measure problem-solving, literacy, numeracy and learning potential.

  3. Application Review: Our Early Careers team will review your application, assessment results and supporting information to identify candidates who best align with our apprenticeship opportunities.

  4. Interview Centre: Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an in-person Interview Centre, where you'll have the opportunity to:

    • Meet Transgrid employees and current apprentices
    • Participate in practical and team-based activities
    • Demonstrate your communication, problem-solving and teamwork skills
    • Learn more about life as a Transgrid apprentice
  5. Pre-Employment Checks: Successful candidates will complete pre-employment checks, including reference checks, medical assessments and other employment screening requirements.

  6. Offer of Employment: Candidates who successfully complete all stages will receive a verbal offer, followed by a formal written offer of employment.

  7. Welcome to Transgrid: Successful apprentices will commence their journey with Transgrid in January 2027, joining a supportive cohort of apprentices from across New South Wales and the ACT.

  • Online Assessment Complete by: Sunday, 26th July 2026

  • Interview Centres: August - September 2026
