Role

Range 4 is distinguished by broader management responsibility, particularly in the areas of finance, human resource and other support functions. Range 4 is responsible for managing a range of functions under a wide range of conditions, subject to the size and complexity of school operations.

Objectives will, generally, be clearly defined; guidelines will be broad and day-to-day direction minimal. Management responsibility extends to ensuring appropriate support levels are maintained across the school. Range 4 generally provides key support and timely advice to the leadership team and school council and liaises with the general school community, the Department and other government agencies and service providers.

Specialised professional roles will carry a high level of independence and accountability where suitable scope is provided to achieve objectives.

An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee¿s position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

Responsibilities

AT GLENALLEN SCHOOL THE NURSE ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ARE AS FOLLOWS:

The School Nurse, under the direction of the Principal/Assistant Principal, will provide for the delivery of flexible nursing duties to meet the need of students with physical disabilities and impairments.

The School Nurse will:

• hold recognised tertiary nursing qualifications. Registration with the appropriate body or possession of qualifications that are recognised by their professional association will be required.
• have a minimum four years work experience in the relevant professional field.

General Work Description

The School Nurse will:

• liaise, as part of a transdisciplinary team, with staff and parents to provide a quality nursing service to enhance the quality of life for students with special needs.
• coordinate a quality nursing service within Glenallen School by the provision of primary nursing care to sick or injured students and staff and carry out regular nursing procedures as required.
• maintain records of all medication or treatment.
• treat all student information as strictly confidential.
• assist the teaching staff in the delivery of health education programs.
• maintain personal professional development and provide professional development for school staff.
• provide regular key support and timely advice and recommendations to the principal and school council in relation to whole school programs and projects. Advice provided will contribute signifcantly to school operations and support policy.
• liaise on behalf of the principal and school council with the general school community, DET and other government agencies and service providers.
• provide leadership and supervision of other support staff and contribute substantially to the development and delivery of professional development in the nursing area.
• provide expert advice and recommendations to school staff about the medical needs of students and recommend support strategies within the school.
• Communication
• Demonstrate a high level of written and verbal communication skills.
• Liaise, as part of a transdisciplinary service, with staff and parents to provide a quality nursing service.
• Maintain confidentiality at all times.
• Demonstrate the capacity to tender information and provide collaborative advice when required.
• Demonstrate the ability to consult with staff outside the immediate work area with respect to the delivery of support services.
• General Administration
• Maintain records of all medication or treatment.
• Maintain an inventory of equipment and first aid supplies.
• Human Resources
• Participate in the Performance and Development Program process to identify own professional development needs and participate in professional development.
• Assist in the development of work practices which ensure appropriate occupational health and safety standards are maintained.
• Delivery of School Services
• Administer medication daily.
• Triage and manage unwell students.
• Catheterisation of specific students.
• Administer enternal feeding
• Provide suctioning when required.
• Provide first aid when required.
• Specific management of wound care/ pressure care.
• Bi ¿ Pap provision when required for specific students.
• Documentation, Health Care plans
• Student managements eg. Seizure, Asthma and Allergy
• Oxygen management
• Provide primary nursing care to sick or injured students and staff.
• Knowledge of PPE

Conditions of Employment

This vacancy is to replace an employee on parental absence and is for a period of seven years or until the employee absent on leave returns to duty at the school.
