Senior/Underwriter, Mining & Energy

Job Opportunity:

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has an exciting opportunity for an underwriter to join our Property team focusing on Mining and Energy, preferably based in Sydney. The role will be responsible for developing and expanding new business opportunities through production & marketing calls with brokers and clients, utilizing underwriting acumen to select sound risks within company guidelines to maintain profitability.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Manage and build a profitable book of property business focusing primarily on Mining and Energy accounts, whilst also contributing to the broader Technical Lines Team.
• Establish, develop, and expand broker and customer relationships to maximise new and renewal business opportunities.
• Prequalify accounts, utilising underwriting acumen to select property risks within company’s risk appetite.
• Underwrite assigned accounts while ensuring appropriate analysis and documentation.
• Underwrite to complex and challenging risks while developing creative solutions for our partners.
• Work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, and make quick thoughtful decisions while maintaining underwriting integrity.
• Work closely with our in-house claims team to help create a positive and transparent experience for our customers.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

• 5+ years of Energy, Mining and/or Property underwriting experience.
• Existing broker and customer relationships, or the experience and ability to develop strong broker and customer relationships quickly.
• Strong underwriting acumen.
• Experience and strong understanding of policy forms, including broker manuscripts.
• Experience marketing to specialised brokers.
• Strong collaboration and team building skills.
• Strong communication skills including negotiation, communications, and presentation experience.
• Degree or equivalent education, and/or strong insurance qualifications.
