This role will be responsible for responding to calls of wildlife requiring transport to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital for treatment. You will be required to conduct rescues of non-specialised species (birds, possums, kangaroos, orphaned wildlife etc) and ensure the safe capture and transport of animals at all times.
You will report to the Senior Rescuer and the Curator of Native Mammals and Wildlife Rescue and work with rescue team members and Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital staff.
Duties Include :
- Answer phone calls or monitor the rescue database for incoming rescues, and liaise with the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital to prioritise tasks.
- Appropriately respond to phone / email enquiries, and provide basic advice when needed.
- Perform rescues and provide basic care during transport of non-specialised species (birds, possums, kangaroos, orphaned wildlife etc) and ensure the safe capture and transport of animals to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.
- Act as a transport service for wildlife from local veterinarians to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.
- Conduct wildlife rescues with a good working knowledge of health and safety.
- Provide a handover of the patient you have transported to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital staff.
- Ensure compliance with departmental procedures, workplace protocols and competency sign off records.
- Maintain records of rescue entries and relevant research data.
- Ensure the Rescue department’s area and equipment is regularly cleaned and tidy at all times.
- Keep senior staff and appropriate managers informed regarding the Rescue department’s day to day operation, ensuring any incident reporting or procedural approvals are completed in a timely manner.
- Conduct basic vehicle safety checks and cleans.
- Apply good interpersonal and communication skills when speaking with guests, other staff members and members of the public.
- May be required to assist with on-the-job training of employees of a lower level of experience.
- Attend meetings as requested by the Curator of Native Mammals and Wildlife Rescue and Senior Management.
