  • TCSA Employees Award / 5, Starting from $89,883 annual package (includes base salary $80,728 + plus superannuation & leave loading)

Taronga Zoo Sydney is looking for a motivated Assistant Behavioral Biologist to join our Conservation Science team! This unique opportunity will lead you to work in purposeful role, joining a leading organisation in conservation of wildlife!

About the Role…

You will provide support to the Behavioural Biologist for project development and implementation, including experimental design, statistical analysis, publication and formulation of recommendations across these areas of responsibility.

Based at the Taronga Institute of Science and Learning, Taronga Zoo Mosman, you will work with the Behavioural Biologist to generate, prioritise and write internal reports and grants to resource prioritised projects and provide administrative support in the delivery of animal welfare policy and procedure.

Key Accountabilities…

  • Work with Wildlife Operations and Welfare, Conservation and Science staff to identify, prioritise, facilitate and conduct projects that will inform management decisions within the zoos
  • Work with the Behavioural Biologist to prioritise projects to be undertaken, working with a wide variety of partners, resource projects by writing internal and external grant applications.
  • Recruit, train and supervise interns and students completing the priority projects
  • Stay across emerging literature to inform projects that fundamentally increase our understanding of animal cognition and behavior, and advance welfare science.
  • Write up results of research projects in reports (with recommendations) and assist in preparing academic articles.
  • Provide assistance to the wider Taronga staff on project design and statistical analysis.
  • Contribute to Taronga Education Programs and other science communication and capacity building activities as required and in a timely fashion, working to enhance Taronga’s reputation for excellence in animal welfare science.
  • About You…

    We are looking for candidates that have :

  • Tertiary qualifications in Behavioural Biology / Ecology, Animal Welfare Science or related areas.
  • Experience with animal behaviour research
  • Good knowledge of statistical analysis and research design
  • Experience with behavioural and statistical analysis software
  • Familiarity with preparing reports, scientific publications, and grant applications
  • Time management and prioritisation skills and experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact courteously and respectfully with fellow employees, interns, volunteers, zoo guests and external collaborators
  • Good track record of assisting with implementation of research results and stakeholder management
  • NSW Working with Children Check.
