Description

About the RFDS (Queensland Section)

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) (RFDS) has a team of over 500 professionals delivering aeromedical retrievals, primary health care clinics, mental health services, oral health programs, and telehealth. Primary Health Care (PHC) makes up two‑thirds of all services delivered, with more than 24,000 GP and nurse consultations state-wide last financial year, over 2,000 immunisations administered, and an average of 200 occasions of care provided each day across Queensland.

Our Role
We are seeking a Primary Health Care (PHC) Nurse (Midwifery is desirable) who is passionate about their important role in providing PHC services to people residing, travelling, and working in regional, rural, and remote areas of Queensland. As a PHC Nurse, you have the opportunity to make a real impact in promoting good health, providing proactive care, and keeping people healthy. In some communities, RFDS is the sole healthcare provider, making your contributions vital.

This position involves delivering essential PHC services in a fly-in and fly-out (FIFO) capacity to communities in the Far North and Northwest regions, which includes providing clinical services on a rotational basis from our Cairns and Mt Isa bases.

As part of your support for rural and remote communities, your broad scope of practice may include:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health services
  • Child and family health services
  • Women’s health services
  • Chronic disease care and support
  • Health Promotion and Health Education Activities
  • Early detection and brief intervention programs
  • Pre-conception, Antenatal and Post Natal care
  • Breastfeeding support and education

The Roster
This is a 0.75FTE position (12 shifts per month) offered on a 12-month maximum-term contract, with a roster scheduled Monday to Friday.

As part of our group practice model, you'll primarily be based in Cairns, with the opportunity to work in Mount Isa on a rotating basis. Approximately every 4 to 6 weeks, you'll spend one week in Mount Isa, requiring three nights away from home, before returning to Cairns for the remainder of your rostered shifts.

  • Rural and Isolated Practice (Scheduled Medicines) endorsement (RIPRN) (desirable)
  • A Respectful understanding of cultural diversity including traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander views of health
  • Capacity to stay overnight in communities (2-3 nights)

Essential Skills (Can be obtained after starting employment)

  • Current Advanced Life Support (ALS)
  • Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Neonatal advanced resuscitation certification

Why join us?
As part of this role, you will establish and maintain long-term relationships with patients, their families, and the community. In addition, you’ll receive:

  • An extensive and supportive orientation program
  • An attractive base salary of $134,146.37 (Midwifery)
