Where You’ll be Working

This Staff Specialist position is based at Mona Vale Hospital providing in‑reach consultation to the Northern Beaches Hospital.

Purpose of the Position

Performing the clinical duties of a staff specialist in palliative care focusing on delivery of acute hospital consult services at the Northern Beaches Hospital, as well as potentially providing outpatient palliative care services and flexible cover across other specialist palliative care services across the Local Health District.

Provide leadership to grow a busy acute hospital service multidisciplinary team, and form collaborative links with wide reaching services in a Level 5 hospital. Implementation of and participation in palliative medicine education and research. The position is part of the Supportive and Palliative Care Network. Ongoing quality assurance activities at the Departmental, Divisional and District levels and additionally as directed by the Director of Medical Services and Director of Clinical Governance.

You will provide clinical management and treatment of patients under your care in a Northern Sydney Local Health District facility or service. This care will be provided within the scope of clinical practice endorsed by the NSLHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee.

The position will provide clinical consultation services within NSLHD and will contribute to the teaching and training of medical students, graduates and other health care professionals and to research, evaluation and quality improvement activities within NSLHD.

Selection Criteria

  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants must have Fellowship of the Australasian Chapter of Palliative Medicine of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians or recognition as a specialist by the Medical Board of Australia or be within 6 months of receiving this.
  • Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them.
  • Sound clinical knowledge in Palliative Medicine demonstrated through successful clinical practice in a very busy environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality assurance activities relevant to the specialty, and comprehensive knowledge of different areas of Specialist Palliative Care delivery (acute hospital, Palliative Care Units and community team).
  • Demonstrated clinical, diagnostic and technical skills commensurate with functioning as an independent Palliative Medicine Consultant.
  • High level interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated ability to lead and work within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Demonstrated participation in and commitment to undergraduate, postgraduate, interdisciplinary teaching and education, including research, quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  • Willingness to work flexibly and collaboratively across services if required and preparedness to participate in any on‑call service, including covering all services across the Northern Beaches geographic area (Mona Vale Palliative Care Unit, the Adolescent and Young Adult Hospice, Northern Beaches Hospital, Community Palliative Care).
  • Prior experience working in the Northern Beaches Hospital and previous experience growing a service are desirable.
