Head of Commercial - Play
We’re looking for the Head of Commercial – Play, a purpose‑driven leader accountable for horizontal end‑to‑end Play business strategy and a 9‑month fixed‑term contract.
This role leads the largest portfolio in the BIG W business covering toys, books, AV, tech, gaming and sporting. You will reimagine categories for the future, orchestrate product development and drive end‑to‑end delivery.
With solid commercial acumen you assess the financial impact of purchasing decisions, understand profit drivers, manage budgets and use financial data to guide long‑term buying strategies that contribute to profitability and minimise losses.
You have a passion for coaching and mentoring your team members with a vision of continuous improvement, building the Team of the Future with clear development and succession plans in place.

What you’ll bring
This is a senior role that calls for a visionary and empathetic leader who has strong interpersonal skills, prior experience guiding a successful, high‑volume retail business of significant scale, ideally within the general merchandise or discount department sectors. Success requires a proven track record of shaping and growing a Commercial buying function (particularly national brands) within a multi‑billion dollar environment, exceptional relationship‑building skills for supplier negotiation, and a proven ability to forge strategic partnerships with national brands across different categories. Finally, you must excel at holistic, end‑to‑end strategic planning and execution, driving collaborative success across all commercial levers to achieve significant, sustained growth.
