About Us
We are a boutique migration law firm based in Mt Waverley, working across all areas of Australian immigration law. Our practice has a strong focus on employer-sponsored visas, but we regularly handle everything from skilled migration to complex visa matters.
We are a small, close-knit team that runs a high-volume practice, so the work is fast-paced and detail-heavy. Most of our matters aren’t straightforward, which means we spend a lot of time on strategy, problem-solving, and getting submissions right the first time.
The Role
We are looking for a Lawyer to join our team in a full-time role based in Mt Waverley.
You will primarily be working on drafting legal submissions and representing clients in the Administrative Review Tribunal and the Federal Court, while also getting exposure to a broader mix of migration and general legal work, depending on your experience.
This is a hands-on role. You’ll be managing your own files, working closely with clients and employers, and taking matters from initial instruction through to lodgement and decision.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing legal advice and guidance to clients on migration law, including assessing eligibility, evaluating individual circumstances, and advising on appropriate legal strategies.
- Preparing, reviewing and lodging visa applications across a range of visa categories, including working, skilled, family, partner and refugee and humanitarian visas, with assessment of eligibility and compliance with legislative and policy requirements.
- Drafting legal submissions and other supporting documentation addressing statutory criteria, evidentiary issues and discretionary considerations.
- Undertaking legal and policy research, including analysis of legislation, case law and departmental policy (including LEGENDcom), to support advice and submissions
- Preparing matters for proceedings, including investigations, evidence gathering, coordination of witness statements and attendance, and issuing relevant notices
- Acting for clients in merits review and judicial review proceedings before the ART, Federal Court, or High Court, including appearing in contested matters where required
- Liaising with the Department of Home Affairs and other relevant authorities, including acting as authorised legal practitioner of record
- Examining and assessing relevant legislation and supporting materials in connection with visa applications and migration-related matters
- Briefing and liaising with counsel, including preparation of briefs and instructing in proceedings
- Supervising and mentoring junior staff and paralegals, including reviewing work to ensure legal accuracy and quality
Qualification and Experience
- Bachelor of Laws or equivalent qualification
- Admitted to practise as a legal practitioner in Australia
- Minimum 1 year of experience in migration law or a related legal field
- Experience with employer-sponsored matters, labour agreements, or complex applications is highly regarded
- Familiarity with Smokeball is highly regarded
