Job description

Looking for more than just another metro roster?
This is an opportunity to step into a genuinely varied and well-supported anaesthetic role while enjoying a lifestyle that most Australian specialists spend years trying to create. With strong earning potential, broad clinical exposure, and the ability to swap long commutes and overcrowded cities for year-round sunshine and outdoor living, this role offers a sustainable long-term move both professionally and personally.
You’ll join a collaborative anaesthetic department servicing a large and diverse population across a modern regional referral network. The caseload is broad, the work is clinically rewarding, and the team culture is known for being approachable, collegiate, and supportive of consultants with varied subspecialty interests.
For doctors seeking a balance between meaningful clinical practice and quality of life, this position delivers both.
The Opportunity
This is a Consultant Anaesthetist position within a major tertiary and referral service delivering perioperative care across a wide range of surgical specialties.
The department provides exposure to:

  • General surgery
  • Orthopaedics and trauma
  • Obstetrics and gynaecology
  • ENT
  • Urology
  • Paediatrics
  • Emergency and retrieval support
  • Indigenous health and remote medicine interfaces
  • Critical care collaboration

The role offers excellent scope for consultants wanting a genuinely mixed practice with high procedural volume and significant autonomy.
You’ll work alongside experienced FACEMs, intensivists, surgeons, physicians, and perioperative teams in a service where anaesthetists are highly valued contributors to broader patient care planning.
There are opportunities to become involved in:

  • Teaching and supervision
  • Quality improvement initiatives
  • Department leadership
  • Rural and remote outreach
  • Simulation and education
  • Research and service development

Flexible roster structures and leave arrangements are available, with strong emphasis placed on sustainability and work-life balance.
The Hospital
This is a major regional referral hospital servicing an enormous and clinically diverse catchment area.
The facility continues to undergo significant investment and service expansion, supporting growing surgical capability and increased specialist services across the region. Consultants joining the department are entering a service with genuine momentum and long-term workforce planning.
The anaesthetic department itself has developed a reputation for:

  • Collegial culture
  • Strong consultant support
  • Broad procedural exposure
  • High clinical autonomy
  • Excellent trainee interaction
  • Flexible career pathways

Unlike heavily saturated metro centres, consultants here are able to maintain broad skills, remain clinically engaged, and have meaningful influence within the department.
Benefits & Support
Package value can reach up to approximately $480K depending on experience, allowances, and roster configuration.
Additional benefits may include:

  • Generous salary packaging
  • Relocation assistance
  • Accommodation support on commencement
  • CME allowance and professional development support
  • Employer superannuation contributions
  • Flexible leave arrangements
  • Visa sponsorship support where appropriate
  • Potential opportunities for private practice or additional sessions

This role is particularly attractive for specialists seeking financial progression without sacrificing lifestyle.
The Lifestyle
This is one of Australia’s most underrated lifestyle destinations for medical specialists.
Forget traffic, long winter mornings, and exhausting daily commutes. Life here is built around space, flexibility, and outdoor living.
You can finish work and still have time for:

  • Fishing, boating, and waterfront dining
  • Year-round outdoor training and fitness
  • Camping and national parks
  • Family activities and weekend travel
  • International getaways just a few hours away

One of the major lifestyle advantages is the ease of travel throughout Southeast Asia, with Bali and other international destinations far more accessible than from most Australian capitals.
For families, the region offers:

  • Strong schooling options
  • Short commute times
  • Affordable housing relative to major cities
  • Relaxed pace of life
  • Strong sense of community

For many specialists, the lifestyle becomes the reason they stay long term.
Requirements
To be considered, you should hold:

  • FANZCA or equivalent specialist qualification
  • Eligibility for registration with AHPRA
  • Experience working within comparable health systems

International applicants with comparable training are encouraged to enquire.
Interested?
Whether you’re looking for a long-term relocation, a lifestyle-driven move, or simply exploring alternatives to metro practice, this opportunity offers a rare combination of strong earnings, broad anaesthetic practice, and genuine quality of life.
