Help Shape a Safe and Compliant Built Environment

Glenorchy City Council is seeking a motivated and professional Building Officer to join our Building & Plumbing Services team.

Working under the direction of the Coordinator Building & Plumbing Services, you will play a key role in supporting Council's statutory responsibilities under the Building Act 2016, Building Regulations 2016, and associated legislation. As a delegated Permit Authority, you will assess building applications, issue permits and certificates, investigate compliance matters, and contribute to the safe and sustainable development of our community.

About The Role

Building Regulation & Permit Authority Functions

  • Assess building applications and documentation for compliance with legislative requirements.
  • Issue building permits, certificates, and approvals under delegated authority.
  • Support Council in meeting its statutory obligations under relevant building legislation.
  • Maintain accurate statutory building records and registers.
  • Provide professional advice to property owners, builders, designers, members of the public, and internal stakeholders.

Compliance & Investigations

  • Investigate complaints and alleged breaches of building legislation.
  • Conduct site inspections and monitor building work for compliance.
  • Gather, analyse, and maintain records and evidence to support regulatory activities.
  • Liaise with stakeholders to achieve coordinated and effective regulatory outcomes.

Enforcement

  • Exercise delegated Permit Authority functions and powers.
  • Prepare and issue statutory notices, directions, and orders.
  • Monitor and progress enforcement actions to achieve compliance.
  • Represent Council in proceedings before the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (TASCAT), courts, and other relevant forums when required.

About You

Essential Qualifications

  • Certificate IV in Government (Statutory Compliance).
  • Eligibility to obtain a licence as a Building Services Provider – Permit Authority.

Skills & Experience

  • The ability to interpret building plans, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Sound knowledge of, or the ability to quickly acquire knowledge of, relevant building legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience investigating compliance matters and making informed, evidence‑based decisions.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A commitment to customer service and building positive stakeholder relationships.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities, maintain accurate records, and meet statutory timeframes.
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to contribute positively within a team environment.

Position Details

  • Part‑time – 30 hours per fortnight
  • Annual Salary – $95,983.93 pro rata
