The role

As a Senior Legal Officer, you'll provide trusted legal advice that supports some of the state's most significant decisions in the areas of planning, housing, infrastructure and local government. Working across a broad range of legal matters, you'll help shape policy, legislation and operational outcomes that make a real difference to communities across NSW.

You’ll partner with senior stakeholders, both internal and external to the Department, to navigate complex and sensitive issues, manage legal risk and deliver practical solutions in a fast-paced environment. This includes working with Parliamentary Counsel’s Office in the drafting of legislation. This is an opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects while helping drive better outcomes for the people and communities we serve.

What you will bring to the role

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex legal information into clear and practical advice for a range of audiences.
• Strong problem-solving abilities, with proven experience analysing complex legal issues and developing pragmatic solutions in a dynamic environment.
• Outstanding stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships and influence outcomes across diverse internal and external stakeholders.
• High level administrative and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, meet tight deadlines and deliver high-quality work.
• Strong statutory interpretation skills and ideally experience in preparing drafting instructions to Parliamentary Counsel’s Office and familiarity with legislative processes.

What is an essential requirement:

• Admitted or qualified for admission as a Solicitor or Barrister in the Supreme Court of NSW and hold, or be eligible to hold, a NSW Practicing Certificate
