The Central Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Unit (CAAFLU) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO) committed to delivering trauma-informed, culturally safe legal and casework services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victim-survivors of domestic, family, and sexual violence. With offices in Alice Springs and Tennant Creek, our service spans across multiple remote communities, including Papunya, Yuendumu, Harts Range, Santa Teresa, Ali Curung and more. About the Opportunity

CAAFLU is currently hiring multiple full-time Legal Practitioners across Alice Springs and Tennant Creek, NT.

Reporting to the Principal Legal Officer, these roles are responsible for providing culturally appropriate legal advice and representation to Aboriginal victim-survivors in the areas of Domestic Violence Orders (DVO's), Victims of Crime Compensation, with occasional Child Protection and Family Law matters. You will work closely with Community Engagement Workers (CEWs) to ensure clients receive wrap-around legal and non-legal support in a culturally respectful way.

This is an opportunity for lawyers motivated by advocacy, fairness and meaningful client outcomes rather than a traditional courtroom-focused career. You will support clients navigating complex legal and social systems, working as part of a small, collaborative team where cultural sensitivity, empathy and a willingness to help wherever needed are essential.

For Tennant Creek-based practitioners, CAAFLU provides a supported transition into the role, including initial training in Alice Springs and ongoing connection with the broader legal team. You will work alongside experienced lawyers and Community Engagement Workers, with senior colleagues providing practical support, introductions to local stakeholders and ongoing guidance as you settle into the community.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1. Providing culturally appropriate legal support and representation in Domestic Violence Order matters, Victims of Crime Compensation, with occasional Child Protection and Family Law matters
2. Collaborating closely with CEWs to deliver holistic support to clients
3. Managing legal case files and maintaining timely and accurate records
4. Delivering Community Legal Education (CLE) and stakeholder training
5. Building strong relationships with external stakeholders and community organisations
6. Participating in outreach travel to remote communities and supporting law reform initiatives

About You

To qualify, you will need to be eligible to hold a restricted or unrestricted legal practising certificate in the Northern Territory. While applications from lawyers at different career stages are welcomed, around 2+ years of post-admission legal experience will be highly regarded.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

1. Knowledge of trauma-informed legal practice and DFSV issues
2. Experience in Domestic and Family Violence, Victims of Crime Compensation, Family Law or Child Protection
3. Experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities
4. Excellent communication and listening skills
5. Flexibility and willingness to travel to remote communities for outreach

You will also need a current ‘C’ Class Driver’s Licence, a Working with Children Clearance, and a clear Criminal History Check.

What We Offer

The salary for this position ranges from $100,000 to $115,000 per annum, commensurate with skills and experience. In addition, the role offers a variety of benefits, including:

1. Up to $30,000 tax-free Salary packaging
2. Remote Area Allowance: $3,900 (single) or $5,900 (with dependants)
3. 6 weeks annual leave + 1 week paid Christmas shutdown
4. 17.5% leave loading
