Job description

Overview

Sonny's Bar is a small, independent wine bar in Perth focused on great food, excellent wine and a warm, relaxed hospitality experience.

Our kitchen is intimate and produce-driven, with a menu designed to complement our wine offering. We value quality over complexity, thoughtful cooking, consistency and a strong sense of seasonality.

We are looking for a talented and motivated Sous Chef to join our small kitchen team and play an important role in the day-to-day running of the kitchen.

The Role

As Sous Chef, you will work closely with the Head Chef to maintain a high standard of food, service and kitchen operations.

This is a hands-on role suited to a chef who enjoys being involved in all aspects of a small kitchen — from preparation and service through to ordering, stock control and supporting the wider team.

You will help lead the kitchen during service, ensuring dishes are consistently executed to a high standard while maintaining a clean, organised and positive working environment.

Main Tasks

-Assist the Head Chef with the day-to-day operation of the kitchen.

-Prepare and cook food to a consistently high standard.

-Lead the kitchen during service when required.

-Maintain excellent food presentation, quality and consistency.

-Assist with menu development, specials and seasonal changes.

-Contribute ideas around produce, flavour combinations and dishes that complement the wine list.

-Complete daily preparation and ensure service is well organised.

-Assist with ordering, receiving and storing stock.

-Monitor food costs, wastage and portion control.

-Maintain high standards of cleanliness, food safety and kitchen organisation.

-Train, support and motivate junior kitchen staff.

-Follow all relevant food safety and workplace health and safety requirements.

-Help foster a positive, respectful and collaborative kitchen culture.

Required/Relevant Qualifications & Work Experience

-Relevant Certificate IV +

-A minimum of 1 years’ full-time work experience in the industry.

About You

We are looking for someone who:

-Has previous experience as a Head, Sous Chef, Chef de Partie or senior-level chef.

-Is confident working independently and leading a small team.

-Has strong preparation, organisation and service skills.

-Takes pride in quality produce and thoughtful cooking.

-Is calm and professional under pressure.

-Has a genuine interest in wine, hospitality and the relationship between food and wine.

-Is reliable, punctual and takes ownership of their work.

-Enjoys working in a small team where everyone's contribution matters.

-Is keen to contribute ideas rather than simply follow recipes.

-Understands the importance of cleanliness, consistency and attention to detail.

What We Offer

-A key role within a small, independent Perth wine bar.

-A supportive and close-knit team environment.

-The opportunity to work closely with the Head Chef and contribute to the menu.

-Seasonal, quality-driven produce and a creative kitchen environment.

-Opportunities to develop your skills across food, wine and hospitality.

-Staff meals and staff benefits.

-Competitive remuneration based on experience.

-A workplace that values professionalism, creativity and a healthy team culture.

The Right Fit: This role would suit a chef who is passionate about food but also understands that great hospitality is about the whole experience

Annual salary will be between $75,000.00 to $85,000.00 (plus superannuation) depending on level of experience.
