Manager, Research Training & Culture - ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computer Performance

The Opportunity

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computer Performance and Integration (QPI), based at UNSW, has an opportunity for a Manager, Research Training & Culture. QPI is a multi-institutional research initiative spanning eight Australian university nodes and working with government, research organisations and industry partners to advance useful quantum computing while building the capability and culture that will shape Australia’s quantum future.

Alongside its research objectives, QPI is committed to developing the next generation of quantum research leaders, embedding equity and inclusion across the Centre, and fostering a culture of scientific integrity and collaborative practice. In this role, you will lead an integrated research training and capability development program for HDR students and postdoctoral researchers, while coordinating mentoring, leadership development, recruitment and onboarding initiatives, and using culture and performance data to inform continuous improvement.

To be successful in this role, you will bring demonstrated experience designing and delivering training, professional development or capability-building programs, together with strong program, project and event management skills. You will be an accomplished relationship builder who can work effectively across multiple institutions, committees and stakeholder groups, and bring sound judgement, strong communication skills and a genuine commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. Experience working in a multi-institutional research environment, supporting HDR students and early career researchers, or contributing to mentoring, recruitment or culture initiatives will be highly regarded.

This role reports to the Chief Operating Officer and has no direct reports.

• Salary, Level 8: AUD $132,445 to $149,228 per annum + 17% superannuation
• Employment type: Full time or Part time
• Appointment type: Fixed-term contract – 3 years
• Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia
• Travel: Interstate travel will be required to visit QPI’s other university nodes across Australia.

About QPI

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computer Performance and Integration (QPI) is a newly established national research initiative bringing together leading scientists, engineers, students and industry partners to accelerate breakthroughs in quantum computing. Hosted at UNSW Sydney within the Faculty of Engineering, QPI spans eight Australian university nodes: UNSW, the University of Sydney, the University of Technology Sydney, the Australian National University, Griffith University, the University of Queensland, RMIT University and the University of Melbourne. The Centre also works with government agencies, research organisations and industry partners across the quantum computing sector.

Skills and Experience

• A relevant degree with subsequent relevant experience in an educational institution or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and training.
• Demonstrated experience designing, coordinating or delivering training, professional development or capability-building programs.
• Proven program, project and event management skills, including budget management, program monitoring and evaluation.
• Demonstrated ability to lead initiatives and competently manage workload, changing priorities and peak periods.
• Strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across multiple institutions and through committee and governance structures.
• Initiative, sound judgement and the ability to develop practical solutions to problems.
• Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a geographically distributed team.
• Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, and to fostering a respectful, inclusive workplace culture.
• An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
• Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.

Desirable

• Experience working within a multi-institutional research collaboration.
• Familiarity with the Higher Degree Research environment and the career development needs of HDR students and Early Career Researchers.
• Experience supporting structured mentoring, recruitment or supervisory arrangements (such as hiring panels, supervisory panels or buddy/mentoring schemes).
• Demonstrated experience contributing to equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives, including designing or interpreting culture surveys and tracking progress against agreed metrics.
