About the Position

The Aged or Disabled Carer provides direct, day-to-day personal care and support to Arco Life participants in their homes and in the community, working to each participant's individual NDIS plan, care plan and, where one is in place, behaviour support plan. The role covers assistance with personal hygiene, mobility and transfers, meal preparation, medication prompting, domestic tasks, transport and community access, together with the social and emotional support that allows participants living with disability, mental illness or the effects of ageing to remain safely and comfortably at home. Because support workers attend participants largely unsupervised, the position carries substantial responsibility for observing and reporting changes in a participant's physical and mental health, maintaining accurate service records, and escalating risks and incidents promptly. The Aged or Disabled Carer is the point at which Arco Life's care planning becomes real for the participant, and the quality, consistency and safety of the service the organisation provides rests directly on how this role is performed.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide assistance with personal care activities including showering, bathing, toileting, continence support, oral hygiene, grooming, shaving and dressing, in a manner that preserves the participant's privacy and dignity.
• Assist participants with mobility, positioning, transfers and the safe use of aids and equipment such as hoists, slide sheets, walking frames and wheelchairs, applying correct manual handling technique at all times.
• Deliver support in accordance with each participant's NDIS plan, individual care plan and behaviour support plan, and support the participant's own choices about how and when that support is delivered.
• Prepare and serve meals and drinks in line with dietary requirements, texture-modified diets, allergies and cultural preferences, observing safe food handling practices.
• Prompt, assist with and record the administration of medication in accordance with Arco Life's medication management policy and the participant's medication chart.
• Carry out domestic assistance tasks including cleaning, laundry, linen changes, rubbish removal, shopping and general household organisation to maintain a safe and hygienic home environment.
• Provide transport and accompany participants to medical and allied health appointments, shopping, social activities, education and employment, and support participation in the community.
• Provide social support and companionship, encourage the development and maintenance of daily living skills and independence, and support participants to build and sustain social connections.
• Support participants living with mental health conditions in line with their recovery goals, using calm, consistent communication, recognised de-escalation approaches and the strategies set out in the relevant support plan.
• Observe, monitor and document changes in a participant's physical condition, mental state, mood, behaviour or home circumstances, and report those changes promptly to the coordinator or manager.
• Complete accurate and timely progress notes, shift records, timesheets and service documentation in the organisation's client management system.
• Identify, respond to and report hazards, incidents, injuries, near misses, medication errors and any suspicion of abuse, neglect or exploitation in accordance with Arco Life's incident management and reportable incidents procedures.
• Apply infection prevention and control practices, including hand hygiene and the correct use of personal protective equipment, and comply with work health and safety requirements in every participant's home.
• Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality and the privacy of participant information at all times.
• Work cooperatively with participants' families, carers, guardians, support coordinators, allied health professionals and other members of the Arco Life team, and participate in team meetings, supervision, training and performance reviews.

Requirements

• Australian citizens and permanent residents are encouraged to apply.
• Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing and/or Disability), Certificate III in Community Services, or an equivalent qualification; applicants without a formal qualification will be considered where they hold relevant hands-on experience in the sector.
• A minimum of one year of relevant experience providing personal care and support to people with disability, mental health conditions or age-related care needs.
• A current NDIS Worker Screening Check clearance, or willingness to obtain one prior to commencement.
• A current NDIS Worker Orientation Module certificate ("Quality, Safety and You"), or willingness to complete it prior to commencement.
• A current Working with Children Check, or willingness to obtain one prior to commencement.
• A current First Aid and CPR certificate, or willingness to obtain one prior to commencement.
• A current Australian driver's licence and access to a registered, roadworthy and comprehensively insured vehicle.
• Practical competence in personal care and safe manual handling, including the use of transfer aids and mobility equipment.
• Working knowledge of the NDIS Practice Standards, the NDIS Code of Conduct and the principles of person-centred, trauma-informed support.
• Sound understanding of work health and safety, infection control and safe food handling requirements in a home-based care setting.
• Competent written English and computer literacy sufficient to complete progress notes, incident reports and electronic shift records accurately.
• Strong verbal communication and active listening skills, including the ability to communicate with participants who have limited speech, cognitive impairment or sensory impairment.
• Empathy, patience and emotional resilience, with the ability to remain calm and respond appropriately to distress, agitation or challenging behaviour.
• Cultural sensitivity and the ability to provide support that respects each participant's background, beliefs and preferences.
• Reliability, punctuality and the ability to plan and manage time across a roster of participants while working independently and without direct supervision.
• The ability to maintain professional boundaries and to work effectively as part of a team.
• Availability to work a rotating roster, which may include early mornings, evenings, weekends and public holidays.
