Who are we looking for?
GHD’s Queensland Ecology and Natural Resources team, part of the broader Environment Business Group has an opportunity for a Senior Botanist. This role can be based in Brisbane, Maroochydore or Robina office.
You’ll deliver a broad range of conservation, impact assessment and monitoring projects, working with vegetation types that include grassland, wetland, forest and woodland communities, and in partnership with GHD’s clients, land managers and state government bodies.
You’ll be encouraged to focus on areas and projects that you are truly passionate about, develop your specific interests over time, and make the role your own. Work with our national ecology service line in other states and territories to explore new landscapes.

This diverse and exciting position will see you involved in:

• Working on local, national and international projects to identify, assess and monitor ecological values, particularly within the markets of Future Energy, Future Water and Future Communities
• Conducting field surveys for baseline ecological assessments, targeted threatened species surveys, long-term monitoring, and assessment of BioCondition
• Identifying ecological impacts, developing avoidance and mitigation plans, assessing significant residual impacts in accordance with guidelines, and developing biodiversity offset solutions
• Applying the principals of threatened species legislation; policy; management, conservation and recovery plans
• Supporting key clients to drive sustainable environmental outcomes on major projects
• Developing relationships with industry networks, government and university leaders and clients
• Working within multidisciplinary teams, to drive best outcomes for clients, community and the environment
• Leading flora surveys throughout Queensland and interstate including verification and mapping of regional ecosystems and vegetation communities, threatened species searches, and biosecurity assessments
• Delivering technical input and review of impact assessments and development of management solutions for conservation of biodiversity values
• Providing expertise on legislative requirements for environmental approvals and specialist advice for clients on project planning, delivery and rehabilitation
• Developing the natural resources business through engagement with internal and external clients

What would you bring to the team

• A minimum of ten years’ experience in a similar role
• Tertiary qualifications in Botany, Ecology or Natural Resource Management coupled with professional experience in terrestrial ecological assessment
• Demonstrated experience in field survey methodology and compliance with suitably qualified requirements under Commonwealth and State legislation
• Ability to work autonomously, with a strong focus on project delivery and client satisfaction
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work on multiple projects concurrently
• Ability to apply sustainable, innovative and practical technical solutions to problems
• Demonstrated knowledge of environmental legislation and previous involvement in preparation of environmental approvals and permits
• Demonstrated ability to lead, manage and deliver ecological projects, including field-based ecological surveys and the preparation of deliverables
• Previous work experience with state and local government will be highly regarded

This role may require incumbents to spend time in remote locations away from the designated place of work to perform field work. Such duties may expose the incumbent to inclement weather, extensive walking across uneven or rough terrain, or a range of natural environments. The role will also include the carrying of instruments and equipment to perform duties in the field.
Access to field work will at times require the operation of a 4-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicle, including driving conditions of gazetted or non-gazetted roads including rough terrain, dirt & sand tracks. In some instances, roster duties may be required to perform the role. These will be agreed with incumbents in advance and may include a change to working patterns for the duration of the assignment. Additional hours, above the standard 8 hours per day may also be required.
