One week you could be in Darwin coordinating travel, veterinary inventory, equipment and surgical kits. The next, you could be the lead veterinary nurse on a remote program – supporting surgery, monitoring anaesthesia, managing patient care, supporting the veterinary team and contributing to community education.

AMRRIC is looking for an experienced veterinary nurse who brings strong clinical capability, practical coordination skills and the confidence to engage with communities and contribute to school-based education activities across a range of settings.

\n

This is a broad role for someone who enjoys being clinically hands-on, organised behind the scenes and confident working with people. You'll support program delivery nationally while contributing to animal health, community wellbeing and One Health outcomes.

Animal Management in Rural and Remote Indigenous Communities (AMRRIC) is a national not-for-profit organisation based on Larrakia Land in Darwin.

\n

We work in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to improve the health and wellbeing of companion animals, people and communities. Guided by a One Health approach, our work includes veterinary programs, education and training, research and advocacy.

About the role

\n

The Program Vet Nurse Educator supports AMRRIC's Regional Program Manager(s) with the practical delivery and coordination of One Health-focused companion animal management services.

\n

Based at AMRRIC Head Office in Darwin when not on program delivery, you'll report to the Regional Program Manager – NT/QLD and combine clinical veterinary nursing with program logistics, equipment and stock coordination, data, stakeholder engagement and community education.

\n

As part of program delivery, you'll also contribute to community engagement and education activities, including delivery of animal health education in remote schools or community events under the direction of AMRRIC's Community Animal Care Educator.

\n

During peak periods, typically March to October, remote program travel may be up to 10–15 days per month. At times, and with remote support structures in place, you may also take a team-lead role with responsibility for coordinating a multidisciplinary team in the field.

\n

What you'll do

\n

Your work will move between clinical nursing, program readiness, logistics and education. You'll:

\n

\n
• attend remote veterinary programs nationally and fulfil a hands-on clinical veterinary nurse role;
\n
• support veterinary surgery, anaesthetic monitoring, all aspects of patient care, anti-parasitic treatment delivery and remote clinic setup and pack-down;
\n
• help implement program plans and coordinate travel, purchasing and other practical logistics;
\n
• coordinate veterinary drugs, consumables, stock, equipment maintenance and surgical kit processing;
\n
• work with colleagues to support vehicle and field readiness for remote programs;
\n
• contribute to program data capture, monitoring, reporting and, where directed, field research sampling;
\n
• support community engagement and education activities, including delivering animal health education sessions in remote schools and community events, and communicating with local stakeholders;
\n
• take a team coordination or field-lead role where required and appropriately supported; and
\n
• represent AMRRIC professionally at community meetings, public forums and conferences where appropriate.

What you'll bring

\n

You will bring:

\n

\n
• a Bachelor in Veterinary Technology or Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, with at least three years' post-qualification experience;
\n
• formal project-management qualifications or 2–4 years' relevant experience such as veterinary practice administration;
\n
• strong surgical and anaesthetic nursing skills and practical knowledge of veterinary equipment and clinical procedures;
\n
• a strong commitment to prioritising patient care;
\n
• experience coordinating veterinary stock, consumables and equipment maintenance;
\n
• experience in team coordination, including demonstrated leadership and/or mentoring in a veterinary setting;
\n
• sound Microsoft 365 and data-management skills, including confidence using applications to record data in the field;
\n
• excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to explain companion-animal health information to people from diverse backgrounds;
\n
• a practical, organised and solutions-focused approach; and
\n
• a genuine commitment to animal health and wellbeing and to culturally responsive work alongside remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
\n

\n

Experience coordinating community or shelter veterinary services, including logistics and resource planning, or working in a not-for-profit environment will be well regarded. Confidence and capability to engage with diverse audiences and contribute to education delivery in school, community and other settings will also be valued.

\n

You must:

\n

\n
• hold an unrestricted driver's licence and be able to drive manual vehicles;
\n
• be willing and able to travel and stay in remote communities for program delivery;
\n
• hold, or be willing to obtain, a current First Aid Certificate;
\n
• be able to obtain the required National Police Criminal History Check and Working with Children clearances; and
\n
• be able to be based in Darwin for the duration of the appointment.
\n
