Psychosocial Support Worker Men's Independence Programme

Can you cook more than toast, complete a practical job and have a genuine conversation without turning it into a counselling session?

Living It Up Community is developing a practical independence program for adult men at a private acreage property in Boneo.

We are looking for grounded, relatable people who can provide calm leadership, have a laugh, maintain clear boundaries and help another man move forward without taking over.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Many men do not engage well in crowded centres or highly clinical environments.

Our private Boneo property provides space, privacy and a slower pace. It will not be flooded with members of the public or multiple groups.

Participants will attend structured four-hour blocks involving activities such as:

• cooking and meal preparation
• gardening and growing food
• household routines and organisation
• safe property-care projects
• budgeting, technology and weekly planning
• walking and community activities
• preparation for volunteering, training or employment

A cooking block, for example, may involve choosing a meal, organising ingredients, following the steps, using equipment safely, solving problems and cleaning up afterwards.

The meal is only part of the outcome. The participant may also be developing planning, communication, concentration, safety awareness and task-completion skills.

ABOUT THE MEN WE SUPPORT

Participants are adult men with psychosocial and neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Some may need support with motivation, communication, planning, transitions, frustration, household routines, decision‑making or participating consistently in the community.

Participants are matched with workers according to their goals, interests, communication preferences and support needs.

They do not need someone to lecture, rescue or control them. They need someone reliable who knows when to lead, when to encourage and when to give them room.

ABOUT YOU

Qualifications matter, but character matters too.

You may already work in disability, mental health or community services. You may also come from hospitality, horticulture, a trade, defence, emergency services, sport, technology or mentoring.

We want people who are:

• calm, reliable and emotionally steady
• strong without needing to dominate
• funny without making someone else the joke
• confident enough to lead and secure enough to listen
• able to encourage without taking over
• comfortable working beside someone rather than across a desk
• willing to receive feedback and participate in supervision
• able to maintain clear professional boundaries
• interested in making a genuine difference - not simply filling a shift.

You do not need to be skilled in every activity. We are building a team in which different workers bring different strengths.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

You will:

• provide participant-led, trauma-informed and non-clinical support
• help participants begin, sequence and complete practical tasks
• respond calmly when someone is withdrawn, frustrated or overwhelmed
• follow participant support plans and risk controls
• protect privacy and confidentiality
• maintain professional boundaries
• record the support provided, barriers, risks and outcomes
• report incidents or changes in risk promptly
• communicate reliably with the LIU team
• participate in induction, supervision and ongoing development.

WHAT WE OFFER

• $35-$40 per hour plus super
• casual, part-time and full-time opportunities

• ongoing supervision and practical feedback
• careful worker and participant matching
• training in functional observations and quality case notes
• the opportunity to help shape a new program.

Applicants must offer at least 12 hours of availability each week. Final hours will depend on availability, experience, participant matching and program requirements.

Applicable loadings and weekend or public-holiday penalties will be confirmed according to the employment arrangement and SCHADS classification. Approved kilometres travelled with participants are reimbursed under LIU policy.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

• NDIS Worker Screening Check
• current First Aid and CPR
• Australian driver licence
• reliable, insured and roadworthy vehicle
• legal right to work in Australia
• NDIS Worker Orientation Module
• satisfactory professional references.

PROFESSIONAL SCOPE

This is a non-clinical psychosocial disability support role. It is not counselling, therapy, specialist behaviour support or a Men’s Behaviour Change Program.

Clinical, family‑violence, safeguarding and specialist behaviour concerns must be escalated through LIU procedures.

MALE APPLICANTS PARTICULARLY ENCOURAGED

Many participants have requested positive male support workers and feel more comfortable developing particular skills alongside another man.

Applications from suitable men are particularly encouraged. All candidates will be assessed fairly according to their values, capability, experience, safety and participant suitability.
