We’re a Melbourne-based technology company, and our world-first technology, SolShare, unlocks rooftop solar for apartment residents. This smart hardware connects a single rooftop solar system to multiple units and common areas, fairly distributing solar energy so everyone gets their fair share. That helps reduce both energy bills and global carbon emissions.

SolShare removes the technical and ownership barriers that have long prevented apartment households from accessing rooftop solar. Built here in Melbourne, it’s now connected over 12,000 apartments across Australia, the UK and the US. We’re doubling our installation base each year, and we’re aiming to connect over 100,000 apartments by 2029. With SolShare 2, we’re now bringing shared battery optimisation to apartment buildings too.

What we offer

• Hybrid work: You’ll be based in our Melbourne office, with the flexibility to work from home. We get a lot out of face-to-face time, so we’d love to see you in the office regularly.

About the role

You’ll build the data systems behind SolOS, Allume’s energy management operating system – turning real-world energy data into the forecasts and schedules SolShare relies on.

SolShare brings together smart hardware, electronics, firmware, software and energy data. We’re building a central Data & Analytics team to turn that data into products, insights and better ways of managing energy, and you’ll join it as our Senior Data Engineer / Team Lead.

SolOS makes SolShare a two-way platform. As well as fairly distributing solar, it can optimise solar, batteries and energy flows across apartment buildings – using data from the building, the energy system and electricity markets to decide how energy is used, stored and exchanged with the grid.

What you’ll do

• Lead analysis of our existing energy data systems and structures, and recommend improvements.
• Recommend a practical data architecture for SolOS and help turn it into a working production system.
• Design and own the data models that support reliable forecasting, optimisation and operational reporting.
• Own data quality across the fleet, so we have reliable data for operational analysis, real-time alerting and customer insights.
• Build and operate reliable data pipelines – validation, monitoring, error handling and backfills.
• Build and run the forecasts SolShare uses to decide solar and battery dispatch.
• Monitor and troubleshoot production data systems, and improve their reliability as the fleet grows.
• Work with our PostgreSQL, InfluxDB / Chronograf and AWS IoT Core + Timestream environments.
• Work with our Product team and specialist contractors to solve problems, manage dependencies, and turn product and operational needs into a practical delivery plan.
• Help establish good engineering practice across the SolOS data stack: testing, version control, code review and production deployment.
• Lead, mentor and develop a team of Data Engineers, while staying hands-on in Python and SQL.

What we’re looking for

You don’t need to have worked in solar or energy before, and you don’t need to tick every box. What matters most is that the role excites you, you enjoy solving real-world problems and you know how to build reliable data systems.

You’ll have:

• Solid production Python and SQL skills, with experience working directly with operational or time-series data.
• Experience building and operating production data pipelines, including validation, reconciliation, monitoring and troubleshooting.
• Deep experience with PostgreSQL or a similar relational database.
• Experience designing data models or architectures, and taking an ambiguous problem from discovery through to a working solution.
• Experience shipping data products or production data systems, not just analysis or reporting.
• Practical experience with AWS or another major cloud platform.
• Good software engineering practice, including version control, testing, code review and production deployment.
• The ability to work with non-technical stakeholders and turn product or operational problems into practical technical solutions.
• Experience leading, mentoring or hiring engineers.
• A willingness to stay hands-on while leading a small team.

Nice to have

It’d be great if you also have experience with:

• Energy, connected devices (IoT), telemetry or other operational time-series data.
• Solar, batteries, distributed energy resources or energy markets.
• Forecasting and optimisation.
• InfluxDB, Amazon Timestream, TimescaleDB or similar time-series databases.
• AWS IoT, or event-driven and streaming systems.
• Data workflow tools such as Airflow, Dagster or dbt.
• Working in a growing product company where the right answer isn’t always obvious.

Right to work

You’ll need valid, unrestricted work rights in Australia. We can’t offer visa sponsorship.

We aim to respond within two weeks, and the full process usually takes four to six weeks. There are three stages:

• Round 1: Online interview (15 minutes) – a short conversation about your experience, what you’re looking for and why Allume interests you.
• Round 2: Technical deep dive (1 hour) – an in-person discussion with the hiring manager about your technical experience and how you’d approach the problems in this role.
• Round 3: Values and team alignment (1.5 hours) – a final conversation with the hiring manager and the wider team, so both sides can work out whether Allume is the right fit.
