Selection Criteria

SC 1Demonstrated experience in grounds maintenance, gardening or a related field

The successful applicant will bring practical, hands-on experience in grounds maintenance, horticulture, landscaping, a relevant trade, or a closely related area. They will be able to demonstrate a sound working knowledge of plant care, pruning, weeding, mulching, seasonal planting and general garden upkeep.

In your response, please address:

• Your relevant work history and the types of grounds or garden environments you have worked in.
• Specific skills you have developed in horticulture, landscaping, maintenance trades or related areas.
• Your experience maintaining a wide variety of garden beds, trees, shrubs and outdoor spaces.

SC 2Capacity to maintain outdoor infrastructure and carry out general maintenance tasks

The role requires the ability to carry out routine maintenance across school grounds and buildings, including minor repairs to fences, gates, paths, playground equipment and outdoor furniture, and to undertake basic painting, plumbing and handyman tasks. The successful applicant will be able to identify, assess and report hazards or safety concerns promptly.

• Examples of maintenance, repairs or trade work you have completed in similar settings.
• How you identify and prioritise maintenance issues or safety hazards and the steps you take to address them.
• Your experience keeping work areas, equipment and storage spaces clean, organised and safe.

SC 3Sound knowledge and application of workplace health and safety practices

The successful applicant will demonstrate a strong understanding of WHS principles as they apply to grounds and maintenance work, including the safe use and storage of equipment, chemicals and garden materials, and correct manual handling techniques. They will take personal responsibility for safety and model safe practices consistently.

In your response, please address:

• Your understanding of WHS obligations relevant to grounds maintenance and equipment operation.
• Specific examples of how you have managed safety risks in previous roles, including chemical handling or equipment use.
• Any relevant licences, certificates or training you hold (e.g. chemical handling, first aid, equipment operation).

SC 4Sound technical knowledge and hands-on proficiency in general maintenance, minor building repairs, and grounds/gardening work, with skills in the use of relevant tools and equipment, and the physical capacity to carry out a hands-on role.

• How you have completed minor maintenance tasks including, but not limited to, repairs to toilets, basic carpentry tasks, fixtures and fittings, moving of furniture and upkeep of facilities.

SC 5Commitment to contributing positively to a school community

An education support class position at this range will perform tasks that are carried out in accordance with guidelines, accepted practice, and school policy under supervision and direction. This may include coordination of other education support class staff within the work area or educational program.

An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students but must not include duties of a teacher as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students can be required individually or in groups up to 4 in controlled circumstances and where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

Certification and/or qualifications of up to three years can be required at this level (noting that Registered Nurse is not included at this level, the first level for which is Level 1 range 3).

A role at this range may include:

• Specific support tasks to achieve outcomes. Typically, this will involve accountability for a single function, (e.g. ensuring data is properly maintained) or the co-ordination of a work area under the direction of the principal or a manager.
• Assisting teachers, within an educational program, by undertaking specific support tasks or the coordination of the support function.
• Supervised health and wellbeing support tasks, medical intervention support tasks, or other specialised student/teacher support roles (e.g. enrolled nurses performing the role as described in schedule 3). These roles require specific qualifications and/or training, including roles where further training must be undertaken from time to time. The role is for a specific purpose, for which there will be direct accountability as opposed to support roles that are carried out by a range of staff performing routine tasks under direction.
• Technical tasks that require a sound knowledge of basic technical and/or scientific principles that are used to develop and adapt work methods and make judgements where there are clear guidelines and limited options. Routine technical support in libraries, science, and information technology would be typical examples.

An education support class position at this range commencing at the base will initially be limited to undertaking routine tasks that are carried out under close supervision and direction. Work that carries some degree of independence will generally involve a limited number of tasks performed on a regular basis where priorities are clear, procedures are well established, and direction is readily available. Subject to any specific qualification and/or training requirement, an education support class employee employed in this range may be progressively required to undertake coordination, specialisedstudent/teacher support tasks, or technical tasks as experience in the role is gained.

Responsibilities

General Maintenance

• Carry out routine maintenance and minor repairs across school buildings, fixtures and outdoor infrastructure.
• Identify and report maintenance issues, hazards or safety concerns to the appropriate staff member in a timely manner.
• Maintain toilets, fences, gates, paths, playground equipment and outdoor furniture in safe working order.
• Undertake basic painting, minor plumbing and general handyman tasks as required.
• Assess and prioritise job requests in the Maintenance Register
• Liaise with the Principal and Business Manager on works to be completed
• Order and purchase goods and equipment as required

Cleaning

• Maintain the cleanliness of external areas, including walkways, entrances, car parks and outdoor communal spaces.
• Keep sheds, storage areas and maintenance equipment clean, organised and safely stored.
• Respond promptly to spills, litter or other cleanliness issues around the school grounds.

Gardening and Grounds

• Maintain garden beds, trees and shrubs, including pruning, weeding and mulching.
• Maintain a tidy, safe and visually appealing school grounds that reflects well on the school.
• Plan and undertake seasonal garden maintenance, including planting and turnover of garden beds.

Other work as directed by the Business Manager or Principal.

Who May Apply

Individuals with the aptitude, experience and/or qualifications to fulfill the specific requirements of the position.

• Previous experience in grounds and general maintenance.
• Sound knowledge of gardening practices, including plant care and seasonal maintenance.
• Experience operating and maintaining grounds and equipment.
• Current Working with Children Check, or willingness to obtain one.
• Sound understanding of workplace health and safety practices, particularly around equipment use, chemicals and manual handling.
• Ability to work independently, manage time effectively and prioritise tasks across a varied workload.
• A friendly, approachable manner and willingness to work positively with the school community.
