Secure Federal Government environment | NV1 required | Senior architecture and technical leadership role

We are seeking an experienced M365 Lead Engineer to lead the architecture, design and technical delivery of a secure collaboration platform within a large and complex Federal Government environment.

The platform is being developed to provide a secure, scalable and integrated collaboration capability for internal users, partner organisations and external stakeholders. Delivered in phases, the environment will support collaboration at the Protected classification and below and will integrate with services hosted across a multi-cloud ecosystem.

This is a senior technical role requiring strong Microsoft 365 architecture capability, broad platform engineering experience and the ability to provide technical leadership across delivery, governance, security and stakeholder engagement.

What you’ll be doing

• Lead the overall architecture and design of a secure Microsoft 365 environment.
• Provide technical leadership and oversight across platform delivery.
• Ensure technical solutions align with project milestones, architecture principles and security requirements.
• Engage with project managers, technical teams, business stakeholders and Cyber/GRC functions.
• Lead and approve key technical decisions across the platform lifecycle.
• Identify, manage and escape technical risks.
• Provide technical governance across design, implementation and operational transition.
• Coordinate cross-team technical activities and resolve complex or escalated engineering issues.
• Represent engineering in senior stakeholder, governance and executive forums.
• Ensure the platform integrates effectively with existing systems, cloud services and external service providers.

Technical responsibilities

The role will have responsibility across areas including:

• M365 tenant architecture and landing zone design
• Federated identity and access management
• Role-based access and secure authentication
• Logical data segregation and data sovereignty
• Multi-cloud integration
• Licence strategy and cost optimisation
• Change and release management
• Technical documentation standards
• Platform governance and lifecycle management
• Resilience, backup and data lifecycle
• Platform engineering and developer experience
• Security, compliance and Cyber/GRC alignment

What you’ll need

• Strong experience designing and delivering complex Microsoft 365 environments.
• Demonstrated experience in enterprise architecture or senior solution architecture roles.
• Strong understanding of Microsoft 365 tenant architecture, identity, security and governance.
• Experience working across complex cloud or multi-cloud environments.
• Experience providing technical leadership across engineering and delivery teams.
• Strong stakeholder engagement capability, including engagement with project, security, governance and executive stakeholders.
• Experience managing technical risk, architecture decisions and design assurance.
• Strong understanding of secure enterprise environments and government security requirements.
• Current NV1 security clearance.
• Ability to work effectively within a secure Federal Government environment.

Experience in one or more of the following will be advantageous:

• M365 environments operating at Protected classification.
• Federated identity and access management.
• Microsoft Entra ID.
• Azure and broader Microsoft cloud services.
• Platform engineering and DevOps practices.
• Secure collaboration platforms involving external partners or third-party organisations.
• Data sovereignty and logical data segregation.
• Government Cyber/GRC frameworks.
• Large-scale Microsoft 365 transformation or migration programs.

You’ll have influence across architecture, engineering, governance and delivery, working with senior stakeholders and technical teams to shape a platform designed for long-term scalability, security and integration.
