About the Role

Reporting to the Education Manager EAL, this role is responsible for the planning, delivery, assessment and continuous improvement of English as an Additional Language education across a range of learning environments.

You will apply learner‑centred, inclusive and contemporary teaching and assessment practices to meet the diverse language, literacy and learning needs of EAL learners. You will support learner engagement, progression and positive educational outcomes while contributing to the development and continuous improvement of high‑quality learning and assessment resources.

Working collaboratively within teaching teams and with community organisations and relevant stakeholders, you will support diverse learner cohorts and pathways to further education and employment.

What You'll Do

• Plan, prepare, deliver and assess learning activities that meet learner needs and align with approved curriculum, learning plans and assessment requirements
• Establish safe, inclusive and supportive learning environments and use teaching and assessment approaches responsive to diverse language, literacy and learning needs
• Support learners throughout the learning lifecycle, including orientation, entry‑level assessment and course selection where required, and provide appropriate educational support and referrals
• Implement learning plans, reasonable adjustments and other approaches that support student participation, engagement, progression and positive learning outcomes
• Develop, maintain and review high‑quality curriculum, learning and assessment resources, as appropriate to the applicable teaching level
• Maintain accurate attendance, assessment and learner progress records and contribute to validation, moderation, quality assurance and compliance activities
• Maintain required teaching and educational currency and participate in professional development, team activities and continuous improvement
• Establish and maintain professional relationships and networks with relevant stakeholders to support teaching relevance, learner engagement, progression and educational opportunities
• Provide mentoring, team support and coordination activities as appropriate to the applicable teaching level

• Demonstrated ability to apply learner‑centred teaching and assessment practices appropriate to learners from diverse language, literacy and educational backgrounds

• Ability to plan, organise and deliver high‑quality teaching and assessment in diverse learning environments

Desirable

• Previous teaching or assessing experience in a VET or relevant education environment
• Experience working with diverse learner cohorts
• Knowledge of current issues and developments in vocational education and training relevant to EAL education

Qualifications & Mandatory Requirements

To be considered for a teaching position at Melbourne Polytechnic, applicants must meet the qualification and competency requirements relevant to the teaching area and programs being delivered.

Qualifications

Depending on the teaching context, relevant requirements may include:

• Appropriate vocational competency and/or qualifications relevant to the teaching discipline
• Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122, TAE40116 or TAE40110); or
• A diploma‑level or higher qualification in adult education or vocational education and training; or
• A secondary teaching qualification together with one of the following:
  • TAESS00011 Assessor Skill Set; or
  • TAESS00019 Assessor Skill Set or its successor; or
  • TAESS00024 VET Delivered to School Students Teacher Enhancement Skill Set or its successor; or
• For teachers in a non‑vocational discipline (e.g. AMEP, EAL, LLN, VCE, SEE, VCE VM, foundation studies and education, or similar), a relevant teaching diploma or higher‑level qualification containing the required supervised practicum.

A TESOL‑qualified teacher must hold an appropriate qualification that includes a supervised teaching practicum in TESOL.
Appropriate qualifications include, but are not limited to:

• A four‑year Bachelor of Education with TESOL as a teaching method; or
• An undergraduate bachelor's degree together with a postgraduate TESOL qualification at AQF Level 8 or above, such as:
  • Graduate Certificate in Education (TESOL);
  • Graduate Certificate in TESOL;
  • Graduate Diploma in TESOL;
  • Graduate Diploma of Education with a TESOL method;
  • Master of TESOL, Master of Applied Linguistics or Master of Arts (TESOL); or
  • Master of Teaching with a TESOL method.

Applicants must also maintain relevant vocational, industry and/or educational currency as required for the programs delivered.

Mandatory Requirements

Appointment to this position is subject to meeting Melbourne Polytechnic’s mandatory employment requirements, including:

• Current Victorian Working with Children Check (Employee) or current Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registration, where applicable
• Current National Police Check
• Completion of Melbourne Polytechnic induction and other prescribed mandatory training.
