New Porgera Limited (NPL) is a company incorporated in Papua New Guinea and owns the Porgera Gold Mine in Enga Province. NPL is a joint venture between Barrick Gold Corporation, Zijin Mining, and the Papua New Guinea Government, combining global mining expertise with a shared commitment to responsible resource development and long-term value creation for Papua New Guinea.

The Porgera Gold Mine will employ nearly 3,000 Papua New Guineans at full production and, over its 30-year operating history, has contributed approximately 10% of Papua New Guinea's total annual exports, making it one of the country's most significant economic assets.

About the role

The Open Pit Engineering Superintendent is responsible for leading the open pit engineering team in delivering safe, efficient, and cost-effective mine designs, planning, and support services. This role oversees short, medium, and long-term mine planning, drill and blast engineering, and scheduling inputs to ensure production targets are consistently achieved in alignment with the life-of-mine strategy and overall operational objectives.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of mine planners, drill & blast engineers and technical personnel
• Oversee the development and execution of short-, medium- and long-term mine plans
• Review and approve production schedules, haulage profiles, mine designs and waste dump designs
• Ensure mine plans meet safety, environmental, regulatory and economic requirements
• Collaborate with geology, geotechnical and operations teams to optimise ore extraction and mine performance
• Provide technical support and guidance to daily mining operations
• Monitor performance against production, cost and operational targets
• Drive continuous improvement across mine planning processes and systems
• Manage departmental budgets, cost control and financial reporting
• Mentor and develop junior engineers and technical team members
• Ensure compliance with applicable mining legislation, safety standards and regulatory frameworks

About You

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent
• 10+ years open pit mining experience, including at least 5 years in a supervisory or superintendent-level role
• Strong leadership and people management capability
• Advanced proficiency in Deswik and mine planning software
• Strong understanding of geotechnical, hydrological and environmental considerations within open pit mining
• Proven ability to develop and deliver mine plans aligned with production and cost targets
• Experience in large-scale gold mining operations highly regarded
• Strong project management, problem-solving and decision-making skills
• Experience with budgeting, cost control and financial reporting
• Professional Engineering registration, or eligibility for registration, desirable
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical information into clear, practical direction
• Sound understanding of mine safety, regulatory and compliance requirements

This role is offered on a FIFO basis either from Australia/New Zealand (preferred) with a 21/14 roster on a contract basis with a highly competitive remuneration package.
