Animal Dermatology Specialist is offering a three-year, full-time residency in veterinary dermatology, structured as a formal ANZCVS Fellowship Training Program. You will train alongside a current resident and registrar, with two registered specialists as supervisors and an experienced dermatology nursing team supporting you. Following successful completion of the program and specialist registration, this residency leads to a specialist position with us.

Whether you are completing an internship, preparing for a Membership examination, already an ANZCVS Member or working in general or referral practice, we would welcome your application. The start date is flexible between now and early 2027, giving you time to finish your current role or serve any required notice period. You do not need to hold ANZCVS Membership before applying, as you can complete the Membership examination during the residency before sitting the Fellowship examination.

Who will train you
\n Your primary supervisor will be Dr Evie Knight, BVSc MANZCVS FANZCVS DipACVD, one of a very small number of veterinary dermatologists worldwide to be dual board certified, holding specialist credentials through both the ANZCVS and the American College of Veterinary Dermatology. She completed two specialist dermatology residency programs, passed both board examinations at the first attempt and has since served as an examiner.

Your secondary supervisor will be Dr Johann Boone, BVMS MANZCVS MVetMed DipECVD, a registered specialist who completed her residency and Master of Veterinary Medicine at the Royal Veterinary College in London and is one of a small number of European-boarded dermatologists in Australia.

How the program works
\n The residency is structured around the ANZCVS Fellowship requirements and learning outcomes for Veterinary Dermatology. Your Training Program Document will be finalised with you and submitted to the College for approval. The program is designed so that, on completion, you can submit your credentials for the Fellowship examination. It includes:

• Progressive responsibility for referral cases, with a supervisor in the clinic with you each clinical day
\n
• Journal club, case rounds and mentorship built into the timetable
\n
• One non-clinical day each week for study, research and credential work
\n
• Support for related-discipline training and the externship
\n
• Support to meet the College's research, publication and presentation requirements
\n

\n

What you will see and do
\n Dermatology suits veterinarians who enjoy diagnostic reasoning, detailed clinical work, practical procedures and following cases over time. Many patients come to us after months or years of recurrent skin or ear disease. You will learn to investigate what is driving the problem, explain your reasoning to owners and referring vets, and follow each patient through long-term management. You will see how patients respond to each decision and, in many cases, work with them for years.

\n

You will work with an established referral caseload spanning allergic, infectious, immune-mediated and neoplastic skin disease; chronic and surgical ear disease; and complex second-opinion cases. Queensland's subtropical climate provides year-round exposure to allergy and ear cases. Across this caseload, your clinical training will include:

• High-definition video otoscopy, myringotomy and advanced ear flushing
\n
• Skin and claw-bed biopsies, in-house cytology, hormone testing, elimination diet trials and dermatopathology
\n
• Intradermal allergy testing and allergen-specific immunotherapy, including rush protocols
\n
• Bee and wasp venom testing and desensitisation
\n
• CO2 laser surgery using a new Aesculight system
\n

\n

Complex cases are also supported by access to onsite CT and MRI at our host hospitals.

\n

A highly experienced nursing team, including senior nurses with close to 10 years' experience in veterinary dermatology, will help run allergy testing, immunotherapy and procedure days alongside you.

\n

Location, hours and salary
\n Animal Dermatology Specialist is an independently owned and operated referral practice. We consult from general practices and multidisciplinary specialist hospitals in Albany Creek, Kenmore and Underwood in Brisbane, and Coomera and Carrara on the Gold Coast. These include Veterinary Specialist Services at Underwood and Carrara. We also run a visiting service to Townsville. The residency position is based across Brisbane and Gold Coast locations and may include occasional planned visits to regional locations.

• Salary of $90,000 plus super in year one, with annual increases recognising your progress through the program
\n
• Full time, 38 hours over five weekdays
\n
• No rostered weekends, public holidays, after-hours or on-call work
\n

About you

\n

\n
• This position is open only to veterinarians who already hold Australian work rights. We are not able to offer visa sponsorship for this role
\n
• Eligibility for veterinary registration in Queensland
\n
• A completed rotating internship or at least two years' small animal clinical experience
\n
• ANZCVS Membership in any discipline, either held or planned within the residency timeframe
\n
• A professional approach, clear communication and the organisational skills to manage a caseload, research and study concurrently
\n
• A driver's licence and willingness to work across our South East Queensland locations
\n
