The Opportunity

Some of the most influential people in a young person's school journey aren't necessarily the people teaching their favourite subject. They're the people who notice.

They notice when a student who normally talks suddenly goes quiet. They know when a young person needs encouragement, when expectations need reinforcing, when a family needs a conversation, and when something that looks like a behaviour issue might have a little more going on underneath it.

Commencing 01 January 2027, the position combines a0.4 FTE Year Manager leadership allocation with a 0.6 FTE teaching load, providing an opportunity for an experienced teacher to take a significant step into leadership without losing the connection to students and classroom practice that brought them into education in the first place.

You’ll take responsibility for the pastoral care and experience of a year group, working alongside students through the challenges, milestones and ordinary moments that make up Secondary school life.

More Than Managing a Year Group

This isn’t simply about behaviour, attendance or making sure everyone turns up in the right uniform.

You’ll help create a year group where students feel connected, where expectations are clear and consistent, and where young people are supported to take increasing responsibility for themselves and the community around them.

You’ll work closely with the Dean of Pastoral Care, teaching staff, Inclusive Education, Counselling and other pastoral leaders to understand what’s happening around a student and determine what support will help them move forward.

You’ll also become an important connection between school and home, building relationships with families and working together when students need additional support.

What You’ll Be Doing

Your role will include:

• Leading the pastoral care, culture and sense of belonging within your year group.
• Getting to know students beyond their academic results and helping them navigate the social, emotional and practical realities of Secondary school.
• Supporting consistent and fair approaches to behaviour, attendance, punctuality and expectations while keeping student growth at the centre of decision-making.
• Working with students who need additional support and connecting them with Counselling, Inclusive Education or other services when appropriate.
• Building strong relationships with parents and guardians and working collaboratively to achieve positive outcomes for students.
• Supporting new students as they find their place and establish connections within the College community.
• Developing initiatives that strengthen wellbeing, self-management, digital responsibility and positive relationships.
• Leading year meetings, assemblies and other opportunities that help develop the identity and culture of your year group.
• Contributing to camps, conferences, activities and the experiences students often remember long after they leave school.
• Continuing to teach and model excellent classroom practice as part of your 0.6 FTE teaching allocation.

For a teacher consideringtherenext leadership step, this role provides an opportunity to develop a much broader view of how school works.

You’ll gain experience in student leadership, pastoral care, family engagement, behaviour support, multidisciplinary collaboration and leading a community of students. You’ll work alongside experienced school leaders and specialist professionals while developing your own leadership judgement and approach. And you’ll still teach. That matters because you’ll continue experiencing school from the classroom while having the opportunity to influence what happens beyond it.

We’re not looking for someone who thinks pastoral leadership means having all the answers. We’re looking for someone who is curious enough to ask what’s happening for a young person before deciding what needs to happen next.

You’ll know how to combine care with accountability. You’ll be able to have difficult conversations without damaging relationships, maintain perspective when emotions are running high, and recognise that consistency and compassion don’t have to compete.

Students should know where they stand with you.

Parents should feel they can talk with you.

Staff should know you’ll work alongside them.

And young people should know that even when you’ve challenged them, you’re still in their corner.

What You Will Bring

• A committed Christian faith and a willingness to actively support Carey's mission, Statement of Faith and values.
• A recognised teaching qualification and current registration with the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia.
• Strong classroom practice and a genuine desire to continue teaching.
• A strong understanding of the educational, social and emotional needs of adolescents.
• The ability to build authentic relationships with young people while maintaining clear expectations and appropriate boundaries.
• Strong conflict resolution skills and the ability to remain balanced when navigating complex situations.
• Confidence communicatingwith students, families, colleagues and external professionals.
• Sound judgement, discretion and the ability to manage sensitive information appropriately.
• A collaborative leadership style and willingness to work across pastoral, wellbeing and learning teams.
• A growth mindset and genuine desire to continue developing as an educator and leader.
