The Internet Edge Services (IES) organization at Amazon Web Services (AWS) is at the forefront of optimizing global internet connectivity for our customers through innovative software solutions. We are on a bold mission to reimagine how the internet's edge operates at planetary scale — building the Border Network of the future: software-defined, running on commodity hardware, and programmable at every layer. This kind of platform unlocks capabilities that simply weren't possible before.

We're seeking a talented Software Development Manager to join our dynamic team. In this role, you'll be lead the team responsible for building, enhancing, and operating software defined controllers — the intelligent control plane that will power Amazon's software-defined network at the internet edge. This is a unique opportunity to work on a foundational platform for how traffic enters and exits Amazon's network. In this role, you will lead a team of software development engineers to understand requirements and extend platforms that support software-defined networks (SDN). You are joining a high performing team interacting closely with other engineering teams across USA and Australia.

Key job responsibilities

Lead an established high performing team to identify opportunities and deliver software defined traffic engineering solutions for AWS's internet edge networks leveraging your software background. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing indistinguishable from perfect global network at the lowest possible cost for our customers. A day in the life

• Manage sprint planning for your in-flight projects.


• Prepare a project report for Director level review.


• Review a high level solution design and coordinate its review with key stakeholders.


• Lead a review of operational metrics to ensure continued improvement in the security, availability and effectiveness of services you own.


• Drive process and software improvements across the space


• Ensure your software engineers have a clear list of goals and projects to deliver and handle escalations from director level down

Basic Qualifications

• 3+ years of engineering team management experience


• 7+ years of engineering experience


• Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations


• Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy


• Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
