MITRE | Australia is building an enduring technical workforce to help solve complex national security challenges alongside Australian government, industry, academia, and MITRE's global technical enterprise. Based in Canberra, our team works at the intersection of mission needs, systems, technology, and national security.

This role is designed for an experienced systems engineer who can contribute to technically challenging national security work from day one while continuing to deepen capability across systems engineering, systems-of-systems engineering, mission engineering, and digital engineering. The strongest candidates will bring demonstrated engineering experience, sound technical judgment, and the ability to apply structured analysis to complex, multidisciplinary problems.

MITRE Australia provides continued technical development through mentoring, structured learning, technical communities, and opportunities to work with experienced engineers across Australia and the United States. Development may include collaboration with MITRE's Honolulu site, technical exchanges, rotational or embedded opportunities, and participation in directly funded Australian or U.S. work and MITRE internal research activities as appropriate to business demand.

This is a permanent mid-career role with a pathway to increasing technical ownership and leadership. Roles & Responsibilities:

As a Systems Engineer at MITRE | Australia, you will apply systems engineering, mission engineering, and digital engineering methods to technically challenging national security problems. You will work with Australian sponsors, operational stakeholders, and MITRE technical teams to translate mission needs into rigorous engineering analysis, architectures, models, and recommendations.

• Lead or contribute to systems engineering, mission engineering, digital engineering, architecture, analysis, interoperability, systems-of-systems engineering, and technology integration activities supporting Australian national security missions.
• Apply structured engineering methods to frame mission needs, analyze systems and system-of-systems interactions, define requirements, assess alternatives, identify risks, and develop defensible technical recommendations. Develop integration approaches and frameworks that enable independently managed systems to work together within broader mission architectures.
• Develop, review, and maintain engineering artifacts including requirements, architectures, interface definitions, traceability products, models, analyses, trade studies, risk assessments, and technical decision products.
• Apply model-based systems engineering (MBSE), digital engineering, and related methods using tools such as SysML, Cameo/MagicDraw, architecture modeling environments, simulation tools, or equivalent platforms.
• Analyze mission threads, operational concepts, interfaces, and interoperability challenges to identify gaps and inform capability decisions, including across Australian sovereign, U.S., and allied capabilities.
• Engage directly with technical leaders, sponsors, operational users, and multidisciplinary teams to communicate technical findings and shape actionable solutions.
• Lead defined technical work packages and, as experience permits, mentor early-career engineers and contribute to technical quality reviews.
• Collaborate with U.S.-based MITRE technical experts and the Honolulu site to exchange expertise, support shared project delivery, and expand technical depth across the enterprise.
• Contribute, as opportunities permit, to directly funded Australian or U.S. work, MITRE internal research and development, technical communities, and other enterprise initiatives that strengthen engineering capability.
• Continue developing technical breadth and depth toward increased ownership of projects, customer engagements, and future technical leadership.
• Development commitment: MITRE Australia will support continued technical growth through mentoring, structured learning, technical reviews, and opportunities to broaden experience across systems, mission, and digital engineering. The expectation is not simply to maintain an existing skill set, but to build deeper capability and increase technical ownership over time.

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree (AQF Level 7 or higher) in Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant technical discipline.
• Typically 3+ years of relevant professional engineering experience, with demonstrated application of systems engineering or a closely related discipline in a complex technical environment.
• Demonstrated ability to analyze complex, multidisciplinary problems, translate ambiguous mission or stakeholder needs into structured technical approaches, and develop defensible technical recommendations.
• Demonstrated experience producing or reviewing engineering artifacts, analyses, models, architectures, requirements, or technical recommendations.
• Strong technical communication skills, including the ability to explain complex engineering concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences and work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
• Demonstrated interest in applying engineering expertise to national security, defence, critical infrastructure, aerospace, or other complex mission environments.
• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally for project, technical exchange, customer, and development activities as required.
• Must be eligible to obtain and maintain an Australian Government NV2 security clearance.
• This position has an on-site requirement of 5 days a week on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated experience in systems engineering, mission engineering, digital engineering, model-based systems engineering (MBSE), system architecture, interoperability, modeling and simulation, or related technical disciplines.
• Hands-on experience with SysML, Cameo/MagicDraw, architecture frameworks, requirements management, digital engineering environments, modeling and simulation, or comparable tools.
• Familiarity with AI/ML-enabled systems or emerging technologies as part of complex mission or systems engineering environments.
• Experience applying mission engineering, systems integration, or Systems of Systems Engineering (SoSE) approaches to complex defence, national security, aerospace, critical infrastructure, or similarly complex systems.
• Experience leading technical work packages, mentoring engineers, facilitating technical reviews, or coordinating multidisciplinary engineering activities.
• Familiarity with Australian Defence capability development, acquisition, or operational environments, including Joint Warfighting Functions, operational concepts, or comparable mission constructs.
• Understanding of allied collaboration and the technical implications of AUKUS, Five Eyes, United States Combatant Commands (CCMDs), or other multinational mission environments.
