Legal Counsel

The role

As The Oodie continues to grow across markets, products, partnerships and channels, the legal questions across the business are growing with us. A newly created role, we are looking for an early career Legal Counsel to join our team and provide practical, commercial legal support across the business.

Reporting to our Head of Finance, this is a broad generalist role where you will work closely with leaders and teams across The Oodie on everything from commercial contracts and marketing matters through to disputes, intellectual property and everyday legal questions.

We are not looking for someone who needs to be the expert in every area. We want someone who knows how to work through an issue, provide clear commercial advice and recognise when we need to bring in specialist external counsel.

It is a great opportunity for an admitted lawyer who wants to move closer to the business, broaden their experience and build an in house legal career within a fast moving ecommerce environment.

What you will be doing

• Reviewing, drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, supplier agreements and other business arrangements
• Providing practical legal advice to teams across the business and helping them understand risk without making things unnecessarily complicated
• Supporting marketing, ecommerce and creative teams with legal queries relating to advertising, promotions, partnerships, influencers, content and customer communications
• Assisting with intellectual property matters including trademarks, brand protection, licensing and usage rights
• Supporting the business with consumer law, privacy and other regulatory requirements across the markets in which we operate
• Managing straightforward disputes and legal issues and helping the business reach sensible commercial outcomes
• Coordinating external lawyers and specialist advisers where additional expertise is required
• Reviewing legal correspondence and supporting the business with responses where appropriate
• Helping us improve templates, contracts and legal processes so teams can move quickly while still managing risk
• Keeping across emerging legal and regulatory issues that may impact an ecommerce and consumer brand
• Building strong relationships across the business so Legal is seen as a practical partner rather than the team that simply says no

Who we are looking for

You will be a qualified and admitted Australian lawyer, likely with around a few years post qualification experience.

You may currently be working in private practice and looking for your first in house role, or you may already have some in house experience and want broader exposure.

More important than having seen absolutely everything before is your judgement, curiosity and ability to work things out.

You will ideally bring:

• Experience reviewing, drafting and negotiating commercial agreements
• A solid understanding of commercial law and Australian consumer law
• The confidence to manage everyday legal matters independently while knowing when to elevate
• Strong communication skills and an ability to explain legal issues in clear, straightforward language
• Good commercial judgement and an understanding that the answer needs to work for the business as well as legally
• The ability to manage competing priorities in a fast moving environment
• Confidence working directly with stakeholders across different teams and levels
• A proactive mindset and willingness to get involved rather than waiting for every question to land on your desk
• Strong attention to detail without losing sight of the bigger commercial picture

Experience across different markets, ecommerce, retail, consumer brands, marketing, privacy, or intellectual property would be useful, but we do not expect you to be an expert across all of them.

This is not a traditional legal role where you will spend your day buried in one narrow area of law. You will get exposure across a growing global ecommerce business and work directly with the people making commercial decisions every day. For someone early in their legal career, it is an opportunity to build breadth quickly, understand how an entrepreneurial business actually operates and develop into a strong commercial in house lawyer.

The role is part time, 22.8 to 30.4 hours per week, giving us flexibility to shape the working week around the right person. Tuesday is an Oodie day, so the team member will need to have this as one of their working days.
