Vertex Workforce is a growing construction labour hire business supplying skilled and general labour across Australias residential and commercial construction markets.

With established industry relationships, a strong pipeline of opportunities and plans for significant expansion, Vertex is seeking a commercially minded, hands-on General Manager to lead its next stage of growth.

This is a broad operational leadership role covering commercial growth, client relationships, recruitment, workforce management, service delivery, financial performance, systems and compliance.

\n

Working closely with the owners, you will have the opportunity to shape the company's structure, build a capable team and introduce the systems and processes required to grow from approximately 15–20 workers to 300–500 workers over the next 6–12 months.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the day-to-day operations and overall performance of Vertex Workforce.
\n
• Develop and execute the business growth plan in partnership with the owners.
\n
• Drive new business development and strengthen relationships with existing clients.
\n
• Build relationships with builders, contractors, project managers, site managers and procurement teams.
\n
• Oversee the sales pipeline, pricing, proposals, tenders and commercial negotiations.
\n
• Manage residential and commercial labour hire performance.
\n
• Lead recruitment, workforce allocation, rostering, mobilisation and worker deployment.
\n
• Build reliable candidate pipelines across general labour, trades, traffic control, lifting and plant operations.
\n
• Improve screening, onboarding, ticket verification, inductions and worker performance processes.
\n
• Establish scalable systems across sales, recruitment, workforce management, payroll, finance and reporting.
\n
• Create clear responsibilities, performance expectations and accountability across the team.
\n
• Oversee budgets, margins, pricing, operating costs and profit-and-loss performance.
\n
• Monitor timesheets, payroll accuracy, invoicing, debtor exposure and cash flow.
\n
• Maintain strong workplace safety, industrial relations and labour hire compliance.
\n
• Introduce meaningful performance measures covering workforce growth, fulfilment, attendance, retention, client satisfaction and profitability.
\n
• Identify opportunities to use technology, AI and automation to improve efficiency and scalability.
\n

About You

\n

You are a commercially capable operational leader who is comfortable working across strategy and hands-on execution. You understand that building a successful labour hire business requires more than winning clients. It also requires dependable workers, responsive service, strong recruitment processes, disciplined margins and operating systems that can support continued growth.

\n

You will ideally bring:

\n

\n
• Senior leadership experience as a General Manager, Operations Manager, State Manager, Regional Manager, Branch Manager or similar.
\n
• Experience within labour hire, workforce management, recruitment, scaffolding, civil construction, contracting or construction services.
\n
• Demonstrated experience building or scaling a business, workforce or operational division.
\n
• Strong business development and client relationship management capability.
\n
• Experience managing recruitment, workforce coordination or high-volume service delivery.
\n
• Commercial and financial capability, including budgets, pricing, margins and P&L responsibility.
\n
• Working knowledge of WHS, industrial relations, workforce compliance and employment obligations.
\n
• The ability to develop systems, processes, reporting frameworks and performance measures.
\n
• Confidence using CRM, workforce management, payroll and business reporting systems.
\n
• Strong leadership, communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
\n
• A practical, accountable and decisive leadership style.
\n
• A current Australian driver licence and unrestricted Australian working rights.
\n

Established relationships within Sydney's construction or labour hire market would be highly regarded.

\n

Direct labour hire experience is preferred but not essential. Vertex is open to experienced operational leaders from related construction industries who can demonstrate the ability to lead people, grow revenue and establish scalable business operations.

Your Initial Priorities – First 12 Months

• Understand the current clients, workforce, team structure and commercial drivers.

• Establish clear operating rhythms, responsibilities and performance reporting.
\n
• Strengthen the client pipeline and secure sustainable commercial growth.
\n
• Expand the workforce from approximately 15–20 to 60–100 workers.
\n
• Improve recruitment, onboarding, rostering, allocation and workforce retention.
\n
• Introduce stronger pricing, margin, forecasting and account-management disciplines.
\n
• Implement scalable systems, technology and compliance frameworks.
\n
• Build the internal leadership capability required to support the next stage of expansion.
