Role Overview

This is a hands-on leadership opportunity for an experienced Work Health and Safety professional who can combine strategic thinking with practical operational support. You will lead the WHS function, guide a small WHS team and work in partnership with leaders and employees to strengthen safety culture, systems and compliance. The role has responsibility for WHS management systems, risk, incident and hazard processes, audits and investigations, workers compensation and rehabilitation, training, reporting and specialist safety initiatives across operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Guide and support the organisation’s Work Health and Safety function, strengthening team performance and encouraging proactive safety practices throughout the workplace.
• Act as a key source of professional safety guidance for leaders and employees, assisting with operational risks, emerging concerns and complex WHS matters.
• Monitor changes to workplace health and safety laws, codes and industry requirements, and help ensure organisational practices remain compliant.
• Review and enhance the organisation’s safety framework, including systems, procedures, protocols and supporting documentation.
• Administer processes for recording workplace incidents, hazards and injuries, using identified trends and findings to improve safety performance.
• Lead workplace safety reviews such as audits, site inspections, investigations and risk evaluations, and monitor agreed actions through to completion.
• Support the effective management of workplace injuries, including compensation matters, rehabilitation arrangements and suitable return-to-work outcomes.
• Develop meaningful safety reports and information for senior leaders, committees and relevant agencies, while supporting the effective operation of WHS committee activities.
• Coordinate safety education, employee inductions and targeted improvement initiatives, while maintaining constructive relationships with regulators and key external parties.

Qualifications and Experience

• Formal qualifications in Work Health and Safety with minimum Certificate level
• Experience within State Government or Local Council is ideal but not essential
• Proven experience establishing, reviewing and enhancing workplace safety frameworks, procedures and organisational WHS practices.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and develop others, organise competing work priorities and achieve agreed outcomes within set deadlines.
• Strong understanding of Australian workplace health and safety obligations and the ability to translate legislative requirements into effective workplace practices.
• Strong communication and relationship‑building skills, with the ability to influence, advise and engage employees and leaders at different levels of an organisation.
• Practical experience identifying workplace risks, evaluating hazards and determining suitable preventative and corrective measures.
• Confidence working with WHS software, electronic record systems and reporting applications to monitor performance, maintain accurate information and support informed decisions.

Highly Desirable

• Previous experience within State Government, Local Government or another diverse operational environment.
• A relevant tertiary qualification in Work Health and Safety, occupational health, risk or a related discipline.
• Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
