Special Education Teacher

Prospero Teaching Australia is seeking passionate and dedicated Special Education Teachers to join our partner specialist schools across Melbourne and regional Victoria.

We work closely with a range of Victorian Government and independent specialist schools, supporting schools that educate students with diverse learning, developmental and additional support needs. A number of our partner schools are also open to international teachers seeking sponsorship in Victoria.

About the Students

Our partner specialist schools support students with a wide range of disabilities, developmental needs and learning profiles. Depending on the school and position, you may work with students who have:

• Mild, moderate or severe intellectual disability

• Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

• Global developmental delay

• Complex learning difficulties

• Communication and language needs

• Sensory and physical disabilities

• Social, emotional and behavioural needs

• Additional mental health and wellbeing needs

• Multiple and complex disabilities

Students may range from early years through to senior secondary, with some schools supporting students through to Year 12.

The level of support required can vary significantly. Some students may require additional classroom scaffolding and differentiated instruction, while others may require more intensive support with communication, emotional regulation, personal care, mobility, behaviour and daily living skills.

The focus across our specialist school partners is on recognising the individual strengths, needs and goals of every student and providing an education that enables them to develop academically, socially and personally.

For older students, this can also include a strong focus on independence, vocational learning, community participation, employment pathways and preparation for life beyond school.

The Role

As a Special Education Teacher, you will play a vital role in creating structured, inclusive and engaging learning environments where every student can achieve meaningful progress.

Depending on the school and student cohort, responsibilities may include:

• Designing and delivering differentiated and individualised learning programs

• Teaching literacy, numeracy and other key curriculum areas

• Adapting curriculum content to meet individual student needs

• Developing students' communication, social and independence skills

• Supporting students with autism, intellectual disability and complex learning needs

• Implementing positive behaviour support strategies

• Supporting students with emotional regulation and wellbeing

• Developing Individual Learning Plans and personalised learning goals

• Assessing student progress and using data to inform teaching

• Working closely with Education Support staff

• Collaborating with parents, carers and families

• Working alongside Allied Health professionals including Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists and other specialists

• Creating structured and predictable learning environments

• Supporting students to develop greater independence and confidence

• Preparing students for further education, employment, community participation and life beyond school

What we're looking for

We are interested in speaking with experienced teachers who have a genuine passion for Special Education and inclusive practice.

You will ideally have:

• A recognised teaching qualification in Primary, Secondary or Special Education

• Current or eligible registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT)

• Experience working with students with additional learning needs, disability or developmental needs

• Strong knowledge of differentiation and individualised learning

• Experience supporting students with diverse learning profiles

• Strong literacy and numeracy teaching skills

• Understanding of positive behaviour support and student wellbeing

• The ability to create safe, structured and engaging learning environments

• Strong communication and collaboration skills

• A genuine commitment to student inclusion and independence

• Resilience, patience, empathy and a student-centred approach

• A willingness to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team

Experience in any of the following would also be highly valued:

• AAC and visual communication systems

• Trauma-informed practice

International Teachers & Sponsorship

We are particularly interested in speaking with qualified international teachers who are considering relocating to Victoria.

Prospero Teaching Australia works with a number of specialist schools that may offer sponsorship opportunities for suitably qualified and experienced teachers, subject to individual school requirements and eligibility.

We support teachers through the process of exploring suitable opportunities and can provide guidance around VIT registration, relocation and the transition into the Victorian education system.
